I saw a note at the bottom of an espn article stating the tigers may not pick up his option. What do you think he would cost and would he be worth it?

Renteria has had 3 extra base hits since April 24th. A home run and a triple in May, and a home run on June 7th.

And unlike Theriot (who has had 7 in that time-all doubles) Renteria has no OBP to fall back on.

Plus, he's been 100 points better at home than on the road this year, and has been in a massive slump the last two months.

He'd be a somewhat interesting buy low candidate if the Cubs SS position was similar to what the Cubs C position was doing at this time last year. Since it's not though, I don't see how trading for Renteria would be fruitful. We would have to give up prospects on a huge gamble that Renteria the rest of the year would be better than Theriot, and there really aren't that many indicators right now that say that he would be.

I would think about it if we sold high on Theriot in a trade for a big time pitcher (like Sabathia).

You don't trade productive SS's they don't come along too often. Now if it was the make or break of a trade for CC maybe but CC has said their is no way he won't test the FA market so I'm less inclined to give up alot for him.

The only reason I would go for Renteria would be to have one more beloved former Cardinal to piss off their fans. Then again I don't really like having former Cardinals on the team.

in the interest of full disclosure, i went to hardball times so i could come back and tell everyone all about how hit-lucky theriot has been and how he's sure to start sucking soon. while the latter may still be true, the former simply isn't. theriot's got a 22.6 line drive percentage, and a .337 babip. if anything, that's low for a guy with his speed. more power to ryan.*

*i mean that literally, it's still not okay that 85% of his hits have been singles

I like renteria as a buy low canidate. He has been one of the better ss in the nl almost every year he has played in the nl. While i appreciate theriots contributions thus far, i like renterias chances of being better down the stretch and in the playoffs

You'd rather have a guy who has a lower BA, lower OBP, lower SLG, fewer walks and more K's than Theriot? Ryan Theriot is having a fine year, no SS in baseball has a higher OBP than he does. He's incredibly cheap too. Thinking of who we could get to replace him is just a big waste of time.
