The Cubs have wanted another LHP in the rotation basically all season. So Gallagher could be the odd man out with another bad outing today. It makes more sense to keep one of Gallagher or Marshall at AAA to keep them stretched out for the rotation if needed. Gallagher hasn't been terrible but he hasn't been great either. Better for him to pitch every 5 days at Iowa than every 11 days for the Cubs.

Reed Johnson doesn't make anyone redundant as he should never start against a RH pitcher and should never play LF except as a defensive replacement late in a game.

Patterson came up because Fukudome needed a couple days off. He's the redundant part right now.

Patterson down for Johson, Gallagher down for Zambrano, Murton down when Soriano returns.

I don't want to start a new thread to ask this question.

Is Neal Cotts freely optionable, or does he need to pass through some sort of waivers?

Not sure but I don't think the Cubs are going to option Cotts. He's been good for them and Hendry mentioned how Cotts has finally found his rhythm (when he was good with the WSox) out there.

The reason I ask is that, when Eyre comes back, the Cubs will have 14 pitchers.

Marshall can be optioned, but that still leaves 13.

I was trying to figure out if any of the "bubble" type guys can be freely optioned.

Wuertz or Cotts are the only possibilities, but I'm not sure either can be sent down without being exposed to waivers.

I think it's time we waive or trade Marquis. Either that or you waiver Lieber. Although I have a feeling that Lou doesn't like Wuertz too much. He seems to have confidence in only Marmol, Howry and Wood from the pen.

Cotts was already optioned once to the minors this year, so he won't have any problem going down again.

Wuertz also has 1 option left. You have to put him on revocable waivers to option him because of his MLB service time, but that's a formality that the Cubs probably did months ago.
