Left-hander Sean Marshall, who pitches tonight in Iowa, is the likely call-up to take Zambrano’s start, Piniella said.

“He’s been stretched out there and is throwing the ball well,” Piniella said. “So it’s certainly a good possibility.” Zambrano will have an MRI arthrogram on his shoulder on Friday, after being examined on Thursday morning.

The Cubs strenuously denied that Zambrano’s shoulder pains were at all related to his neck spasms from last month, despite Zambrano’s comment on Wednesday that he thought they probably were.

Zambrano had not experienced any shoulder problems this season until Wednesday night’s game, and the Cubs are adamant that this is a new injury. Piniella did not have any information on Zambrano other than the fact that they’d find out soon what is wrong with him.

“I have nothing to add except that I hope it’s not serious and I hope we find out what’s wrong and we can take care of it in short order,” Piniella said.

Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds are both sitting out Thursday’s game because of their respective injuries, though Johnson said his back is getting better and both expect to be able to play this weekend against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs may call up Eric Patterson as a spare outfielder, just in case. Patterson would be able to be recalled if someone, say Zambrano, was placed on the disabled list.

Patterson really hasn't impressed me at all, why not Pie? Do we even need another OF? We got Murton here.

Marshall dealing through four tonight.

I definitely prefer Pie over Patterson unless they think Pie still has some work to do and when they do call him up they want to do it for good. Just grasping at straws.

I hope Patterson isn't recalled because that means somebody is headed to the DL, and the only one that is likely to be serious enough to do that would be Z. Pie could come up for Murton though.

Z on the DL would mean missing 2 starts, and Im OK with that. It would be retroactive to yesterday, so hed miss a game against the Orioles and a game against the White Sox, and hed be back to face the Giants.

It would be retroactive to today, since he pitched yesterday.

If Edmonds and/or Johnson are going to be out longer, and if Zambrano is going to be out long enough to go on the DL, I think the logical move would be to DL Zambrano and call up an OF (I'd prefer Pie) initially, then send a position player down and call up Marshall when Zambrano's turn comes up again. No need to bring up Marshall before the day he'd start.

Something might need to be done. Even if Johnson and Edmonds are day to day, we can only go so many days with such a short bench, especially when we wont have the DH the next 3 games.

Also, Pie is just starting to find his groove in Iowa, and I dont think it would be wise to put him back into a platoon situation, and then send him back in a few weeks.

What may be kind of ironic is that all these non deals the Cubs hav made may have been the best move they have made, along with picking up Edmonds for free. The young guys have done a nice job of stepping up imo.

And don't forget the Cubs got Johnson for free too. He hasn't contributed as much, but he was certainly worth the cost. :D

True. The farm system that has been said to be terrible, has done a pretty nice job. In the old days, baker would play none of them and cry for a Perez type to save the team with a 150 average. I have liked the way Lou has handled Edmonds as well.
