BA rated RHP Jason Whitlock (26th rounder out of WVU) as the 13th best prospect in the Mid-Atlantic.

None of the other guys the Cubs have picked after Whitlock and Gray made BA's top state-by-state prospects. Not even Bob Brenly's son.

Is it possible that a team will draft a high schooler with a strong commitment in a later round in order to develop a relationship with that player that may help them when they are draft eligible?

Doubt it. This isn't a 14-year old Dominican kid who's more likely to sign with your team over the Yankees (despite the Yankees offering $200k more) when he's 16 because you've built a great relationship.

Didn't they draft Brenly as a nice gesture last year, as well?

EDIT: Wow, that was 2005 in the 43rd round.

38th rounder: OF Sean McNoughton, BYU

An All-Freshman choice in 2005 as a second baseman, Sean McNaughton returned to BYU this year after his two-year Mormon mission and led the team in the triple-crown categories as well as in stolen bases. He's a talented, physical offensive player with bat speed but no defined position or pro profile at just 5-foot-9, 180 pounds.

Yeah, if it does exist it isn't much of a factor, but I can't think of any other reason to draft Sonny there.

Yeah I fixed it right away. I guess I am thinking Lakers.

40th rounder: 2B/SS Jared McDonald, Pima CC (AZ)

The JC hitters offer less than the pitchers, with no consensus top prospect. For some, it's Pima's Jared McDonald, a juco shortstop and likely pro second baseman who dominated the league, batting .467 with 11 home runs. He's committed to Michigan State, a surprise and perhaps a sign that he's not an elite player, as most of the top players in the conference commit to Arizona or Arizona State. He's a contact hitter with some similarities to Adam Kennedy, with an unorthodox lefthanded swing, spray approach and solid athleticism.

Same school the Cubs drafted Donnie Veal.

43rd rounder: RHP Jesse Ginley, Dunnellon HS (Dunnellon, FL) - committed to St. Petersburg College (FL)

The leading candidate, Dunnellon High pitcher Jesse Ginley, said he has had some contact with the Chicago Cubs, but does not expect to be chosen this year.

"I'm not trying to get my hopes up," said Ginley, who produced 7 wins, 104 strikeouts and a 1.96 ERA for the Tigers this year. "Just trying to let reality set in."

47th round: OF Chad Cregar, Western Kentucky

48th round: RHP Dylan Mosely, Louisiana Tech

49th round: RHP Hunter Scantling, Episcopal HS (Jacksonville, FL) - 47th best prospect in Florida per BA

Also committed to Florida State, Hunter Scantling is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound righthander with an upper-80s fastball and fringy secondary stuff. He is projectable and should add velocity to his fastball.

50th round: RHP Peter Levitt, Pitt CC (NC)

Draft over.

Why are we drafting Sonny, he's not going to sign...

To give the casual fan something to bitch about in 10 years when he is a stud and they find out that we lost out on him.

I mean there's no doubt he is a gamer, the kid is an insane athlete Ive played with him for years. Unless we are shelling out HUGE dollars.
