Did anybody else hear the stupidity that just came out of Steve Phillips' mouth on ESPN during the Twins/Yankees game? In the top of the 8th with one out Jeter singled and tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out. Abreu then grounded out to end the inning. So fast forward to the ninth inning when A-Rod leads off with a single, to which Phillips says this

 

Well that is why Cuddyer throwing out Jeter at 2nd in the top of the 8th was such a huge play. If he hadn't done that, A-Rod's single would have driven him in.

 

So apparently Arod singling in that AB was a predetermined outcome and would have happened even if Joe Nathan wasn't the one pitching to him and even if he was batting with a base open, 2 outs, and a tie game as opposed to leading off an inning trailing by one.
