Heard Saturday that Greg Maddux was the one who pointed out to Edmonds his stance change. He's been hitting ever since. If he continues to hit..wow. We have no serious weakness other than needing another starter (Hill?) and I'd like to see a nasty loogy. (Marte?) Also, what about Hoffpaiur? You can't send him down when Ward comes back can you? No need to trade valuable prospects for that, just eat a ton of ice cream and spit.

There's always Fontenot, who is the worst of our 4 middle infielders at this point

Yeah, but don't forget he's a lefty bat.

Has anyone heard how long Ward will be out? He's on the 15 day DL but is he expected to come back after 15 days?

Regardless of how Hoffpauir does he goes down for Ward. Of course Piniella likes him so perhaps they might DFA Ward but that seems unlikely. I really doubt they'd send Fontenot down since it would prevent Piniella from making some of the double switches, especially now that Derosa is batting 8th.

Did Maddux point this out AFTER Edmonds left the Padres? I would find that kind of odd that he would wait until he was off his team to do this.

Since he said "He's been hitting ever since" I'm guessing he pointed it out to him Thursday.

I suppose you're right Biitt but that's just strange for a guy to do that after he leaves your team and not while he's on it. Maybe Greg really is a Cub at heart.

You can pretty much etch in stone that Hoffs going back to Iowa. Cedeno or Fontenot might be a more logical choice, but you need those 2 extra middle infielders. The only other guy on the team whose ever played infield is you know who, and do we really want to see that, even if is a rare occurance?

DFAng or trading Ward might be a better move, but it wont happen unless some power starved team would pick up the remainder of his salary. Hes done nothing to deserve it, but Hoff is a better investment.

The good news for Hoff is that between dmonds, Ward, and Johnson, Johnsons the only one who might be on the team next year, and if Pie proves he can be a full time, major league CF, wed have no need for him making Hoff a cinch to make the team next year if he has another impressive spring, as well as Murton unless hes traded by then. Also, if he doesnt get injured again, hes sure to come back in September.

On top of that, Pie may lose another 1/2 season of "seasoning". However, the Cubs may just be good enough to overcome the ridiculous decisions they some times make.

Those stupid Cubs. They're so dumb, putting together the best team in baseball and winning all the time. Hendry and Lou should be fired.

Ward has had 25 at-bats this year, has an .812 OPS, and the only reason he doesn't have any higher is that because he's been very unlucky with his BABIP (20.0% LD percentage and a .211 BABIP..it's rather hard to get much more unlucky then that). Even with him being that unlucky, he's still putting up a .200/.412/.400 line. He seems pretty likely to put up over an 850 OPS once again this year.

And anybody is ready to drop him because Micah Hoffpauir has had a great 19 at-bats?

Remember, they're both injury prone. The best way to make sure the Cubs have 1 of them available all season is to send Hoffpauir to the minors. Sure, it's sad for him that there's no spot for him right now, but he'll get his chance if Ward gets hurt again, and he'll almost certainly replace Ward after the season. There's no real reason to do it right now though. At the same time though, Hoffpauir's presence means that Ward should make sure he's absolutely 100% before returning to the team.

Demoting Pie and signing and playing Edmonds has nothing to do with the Cubs winning. But, if it makes you happy...

Ward's already eligible to come off. The latest note is that Piniella hopes that he's ready to come back by the Toronto series on June 13th.

You mean you don't believe in the miracle of Edmonds getting up off the mat for one last hurrah in the face of his old team?

I'm not sure I do either. But I'm certainly not booing when he hits one of the ballpark, that's for sure.

if Edmonds keeps hitting, let him bat 7th. he certaily hasn't cost us any games, and his defense has been good enough. we'll see how he does on the road though

I honestly don't think Edmonds is done. I really think that he was just rusty and is starting to heat up. Also, I actually buy the fact that he has adjusted his approach and I don't mind him playing CF for the Cubs.

Chances are, with Pie up here playing instead of Edmonds, they wouldn't be any better off this year anyway.

Long term, on the other hand, they're obviously probably worse off. I'm not all that high on Pie but it would've been nice to see him get an extended look and a chance to struggle.

If this weekend hadnt happened, Id give Edmonds until Ward returned, tops. However, since it did happen, its going to buy him some time. If he can produce, he wont go anywhere. He can still field, and he looks like enjoys being out there.

As Ive said since we first got him, if he can give us anywhere near what he been capable of in the past, he'll be ahuge asset to this team.

In regards to his defense, see the other thread on Edmonds. I thought it was fine, too but a few disagree - one saying he's the worst center fielder in baseball.

I don't know what is happening to me, but Edmonds becomes less hated every time he puts a ball off/over the wall or makes a wondrous catch.
