A best ball tournament on a par 3 course could make for a lot of downtime between holes. A scramble makes more sense.

True. But, the downtime between holes also allows the teams behind/in front of you to keep a close eye on whether or not you're cheating. [-X

Also, a par 3 course doesn't really take all that long to play. Should be done in 3 hours, max.

ETA: I'm actually calling the GM for the company that's hosting this event to find out which type of scramble it actually is.

Yeah, shouldn't be long. But it depends on how many groups are out there. Most scrambles I've been in usually have at least 1.5 groups per hole to start. If they have 2 teams at every hole it'll drag out.

Needless to say, I'd much rather be doing that today.

Kujay,

The golf course that I thought was in Sunnyland appears to actually have a Washington address.

Quail Meadows is my favorite course in that area if you ever get back up that way to golf.

Yeah, me too. Even if it is supposed to be hotter than hell. The drinks will be cold and I'll remember sun screen this time. That might sound weird, but I've been out golfing probably 10 times already this year, and only this past Monday did I actually get burnt. A mild burn, but still a burn. Today, I'd get absolutely scorched without sun screen.

I need to get some sun on my feet. The tan line from my legs to my feet is starting to get comical.

Thanks. I'm actually up there quite a bit. I think we look at QM last time I was there but couldn't get a tee time.

Today is a first for me. I'm playing in a 4 man best ball scramble. That's not actually unusual at all, but that it's on an 18 hole, par 3 course seems a bit strange to me.

.

This is a pet peeve of mine. Is there a type of scramble where you don't play the best ball? Why not just say scramble? We'll all know what you mean. Otherwise, why not say "best golf ball scramble of golfing by using the best of the 4 golf shots as a team"!

I'm sure at least one team will have already filled out their 18 under card before they've left the 1st tee.

To relieve your peeve, I'll let you know now that there most certainly is other types of scrambles. Different players hitting where the ball lies is another type of scramble. I tee off, you hit the next shot, etc...

No, I hit, you hit is called alternating shot not a scramble. We both hit then I hit your shot is a different kind of alternating shot (Scotch?) but should never ever be called a scramble. Not ever!

Also best ball means you play your own ball tee to green and then we pick the best score. Better ball is the less used name that everyone knows as a scramble.

edit: I see other people said this already.

11 under won the tournament (supposedly). My drunken team finished 4 under. The last place team was 5 over.

It was a standard scramble, and it was actually much more difficult than I originally imagined.

Great fun!

I'm a golf novice. Can someone explain why I can hit my long irons with a nice, deep draw and I can't hit my woods for [expletive]? I hit my driver straight, but I never seem to make solid contact- kind of makes a hollow sound when I connect.

Also, good thing I can hit a 3 iron 230 yards because I can't hit any fairway wood with any consistency.

Complete novice question: If I wanted to just show up at a driving range and start hitting, what all would I need in terms of equipment?

a couple of clubs, glove(if you use one), proper attire(depending on where you're going)

what size driver are you using?

i ask because maybe you're not concentrating on your contact when using a large driver...much easier to stay down and through the ball with an iron imo....just a thought.

Also, could be standing too close. You have to stand further back with the driver than with irons. If you're too close, you could be having to adjust too much in your backswing.

I'd go with a 5 iron, 7 iron and if you're feeling adventurous a driver.

Lot's of people have this problem and there are many reasons why this happens. When you set up, try tucking your right elbow in closer to your body. This should help make your swing more compact.

This is just a few years after she reportedly almost died in child birth, right?

I'm just wondering who will be the first blogger to joke about Phil being the one with breast cancer.

I think (hope) they'll at least wait until she's ok.

i'm becoming irate listening to people say that mickelson choked. he shot 30 on the front 9 by going for every pin; he went for the pin on 12 and people are ripping on him for not shooting at the center of the green. he didn't get back in contention by playing that way; he rolled the dice again and lost.

by the way, tiger woods bogeyed the last two holes. sometimes a guy just has a bad hole or two, it's not always a choke.

The problem for me on 12 wasn't that he went for the center of the green, it was club selection. He went with a 9 iron that he had to smash to get it there. He should have gone with less power on more club.

The start of that round is what it was. But the tournament is won and lost at the end of the round on Sunday. And nobody went after it. I just would like to see the Champion be someone that played great golf at the end. I don't think any of them played great golf at the end.

Phil didn't have to crush that 9 iron. He just needed to hit it clean. Phil's 9 iron goes as far as most other people's 8 iron. If he hits an 8 iron there, he's off the back side of the green and in an impossible position to try to get it close to the pin. Phil was only a couple of feet from landing where everyone else in the tournament landed.

Phil didn't choke. However, he did play his typical golf. He'll wow you with one shot, and then make you scratch your head on the next one. It's worked for him over the years, because he has a lot of tour victories on his resume, including majors.

Agreed. Phil is no Tiger, but that doesn't mean he choked. Nobody on tour makes every 5 footer than matters, except Tiger. Phil kept hitting insane shots and shot a 30 on the front nine, kept sticking it close on the back.

The single biggest thing Tiger has on everybody else on tour is his putting. He is the best putter of all time, particularly under pressure. He also has a lot of other great traits, especially his mental strength, but his putting sets him apart. A ton of great ballstrikers out there. If Phil, Vijay, Sergio, Perry putt like Tiger, they'd be nearly as good as him.

It seems to me like Best Ball makes more sense on a Par 3 course than Scramble.

I guess a lot of people won't get to hole out with best ball, but most every will hit at least 2-3 shots per hole. To me, a best ball tournament makes more sense on a par 3 in terms of scoring. The field would be more separated. Birdies would be more rare, most of the scores should be around par on a given hole. In a scramble, even 4 decent players should birdie most holes, especially on easy greens. 1/4 will put it within 10 feet a good percentage of the time, and then 1/4 will drain a 10 footer especially if they know the line and speed after putt #1. When I've played in scrambles, it often becomes a test of who doesn't screw up and not par. On an easy par 3 course, its amplified even more because many average to poor golfers tend to be more competitive on short holes than longer ones (my wife, a relative beginner, pars more par 3s than 4s or 5s). That's why I don't like the scramble idea.

edit- oh, tourney happened. I guess if 11 under was the winning score, then there were more pars than I would have predicted.

Very sad news. Hits home for me because my wife and I are around the same age as Phil and Amy. Hopefully, things work out for them.

Yeah, Phil is the man where I live. He went to Patrick Henry High, which is where our kids currently go. A lot of the people I am friends with here went to school with Phil.
