Which player would you prefer?

Simple question. Would you rather have:

 

A) A player who has a .900 OPS, but is extremely streaky. Two thirds of the season the season his OPS is around .600. The other third its around 1.200.

 

B) A player who has an .850 OPS but is pretty consistent. Half the season his OPS is .800. The other half its around .900

 

 

How about for different extremes? (.900 OPS streaky vs. .825 OPS consistent, etc)

 

Also, assume the players are completely equal in all other factors, play the same position, are the same age, and cost is not a factor.

I'd probably take the more consistent performer, but I could live with the streaky hitter as well.

Unless for half of the 2/3 of a season where the guy has a .600 OPS he's injured, your math is wrong. Under your scenario, assuming the AB's are even every month, the player would have a .800 OPS. For your overall OPS to be .900, for 2/3 of the season the player would need to have an OPS of .750.

Depends on how consistent the rest of my team is, but all else being equal, Player B.

 

I would rather have consistent production rather than piling up points against the Pirates.
