Arizona Phil: Hernandez Suspension Nears End

Today:

  • Robert Hernandez threw what was likely his final extended spring training outing as his suspension ends on Sunday:
Of course it's always possible that the Cubs will keep Hernandez at Fitch Park beyond the end of his suspension, either as further punishment or because there is no room for Hernandez on the Peoria roster. But based on the way he has thrown the ball so far at EXST, Hernandez looks to be more than ready to step back into the Chiefs starting rotation immediately. (He also shook everybody's hand after the game, like he is planning on taking a long trip someplace soon).
  • Arik Hempy continues to struggle but hard throwing RHP Rogelio Carmona looked impressive (1.1 IP, 0 R, 4 K).
  • Ryan Acosta has joined extended spring training.
  • LHP Cody Hams has returned to Australia where he will attend the MLB Baseball Academy.

Yesterday:

  • Pawelek: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HBP, 61 pitches (35 strikes). Since his sprained ankle: 11.1 IP, 8 H, 0.00 ERA, 14 K/4 BB.
  • Hatley: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. In his last 14.1 IP: 8 H, 1.89 ERA, 10 K/5 BB.
  • Harol Tolentino threw 2 shutout innings.
  • Robinson Chirinos has arrived and warmed up pitchers as a catcher for the first time.

Caridad: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K/0 BB - best outing since joining the Cubs

Muldowney: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K/0 BB

Colvin is 0/1 with 3 walks tonight.

Wow. And one of those walks against the rehabbing Rafael Soriano.
