Interesting blog thus far. I like how he said he started so he could interact with fans of the team, as opposed to his own personal enjoyment (or whatever). I also like how he was upset that they have to face Zambrano, and said that Zambrano's clip in Hardball Made Easy is hilarious.

I thought he made an interesting point that the Padres have extreme away splits, considering they play zero away games in Petco to weigh down the average and they've played an inordinate amount of away games in Coors and Chase. Might be worth considering the next time we're salivating over a Padres player based on his away splits. Edited by Elrhino

It works for everyone, you can't just take a guys road splits and count them as his true value. It is more extreme(ly bad to use) for extreme ballparks.

Paul, I know you didn't mean the article to be anything more than a quick and dirty comparison, but selection bias plays a huge role in skewing your numbers. Sure, Petco has an affect on opponents batting line, but the quality of the Padres pitchers does much more to supress their triple slash stats. You'd need to do some normalization to come up with a more real analysis of Petco's affect.

Ryan,

You're absolutely right. We take that into account when performing our more detailed analysis.

and not to mention in a sport where sample size is something you strive for and really need inorder for stats to have validity, why would you cut your sample in half? Park adjusting home stats and road stats is iperative...now if there were only good park adjustments out there and easily accessible...
