...if there's a save situation, which is good, but...

Manager Lou Piniella said after the game that Carlos Marmol would get the nod today if there's a save situation, giving Wood two straight days of rest thanks to Tuesday's scheduled off-day.

Marmol's arm is going to fall off before we even get to September. :banghead:

yeah. i mentioned this in the game thread, but marmol should get the day off too, imo. what's the point of having 12 pitchers if you aren't going to use them?

Whoa; overreact much? Who do you want Lou to use? You're certainly not going to throw Howry out there with the way he's throwing and I certainly don't want to see Hart/Lieber/Piggy out there in a role they've never done before. You can make a decent case for Wuertz but 1) he still has occasional problems with the strike zone and 2) I'd rather see him used in the role he is best at: coming in and stranding inherited runners. I for one would be a lot more upset if Lou didn't use Wuertz in a pressure 7th or 8th inning spot because he was saving him and it ended up costing us the lead.

I don't think pitching possibly 6 innings in a week constitutes overuse to the point that "his arm is going to fall off before September". I don't want to see him regularly pitch 3 days in a row but occassionally doing so when the situation warrants it, especially early in the season, should not be a source of angst.

i think the reason for the (over, possibly) reaction stems from last year. if i remember right, marmol was really leaned on last year to the point where people were wondering if he was being over-used. then lou starts off this year by putting him out there four of the first six games and intends to use him again today, making it five out of seven.

Exactly.

I put Howry out there. It shows a little faith in him and might get his confidence back up along with his mechanics. I'd rather not use Marmol again. Hopefully the Cubs score a bunch of runs and we don't have to worry about this.

I am hoping they only use Marmol if it's a one-run game, or a situation where the current batter can tie/win the game. I'm ok with the Cubs using anyone else in a more manageable game. Heck, I have more faith in Wuertz right now than Howry. Get Wuertz and Pignatiello some time.

Darn, I forgot about Weurtz. Yeah, that's what I would do too.

Seriously, we must be aiming to build up Marmol's value to trade him, because I can't see how Lou is so blind to his overuse.

It's not that I don't understand he's good. He is. But I almost wish they had "Joba Rules" for him.

I don't understand this. Maybe I am missing some fundamental concept about pitching, but I don't see that great of overuse so far.

Marmol has pitched:

155 IP in 2004

153.2 IP in 2005

138 IP in 2006

110.3 IP in 2007

Not including winter league.

So he's throwing less innings than he ever has. As far as days used, he is throwing as much as any other setup man in baseball. I understand its not wise to turn a starter who pitches every 5 days into a reliever who can throw 4-5 times a week, but he did appear in 66 games last year, so its not like this is new to him.

it'd also be nice if the cubs would stop playing so many close games. i mean, when you get a 7 run lead, ideally you're not going to end up using almost every arm in your bullpen. but, it will be nice when howry gets over his early-season funk and becomes a reliable arm, because right now if you have a one run lead late in the game, you don't want anyone not named wood or marmol coming in the game.
