Definitely 2B Tony Thomas and C Wellington Castillo. Amongst the pitchers, I'd say Ceda or Russell.

# Tony ThomasJr. singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Taylor Green.

# Jonathan Wyatt out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Taylor Green to first baseman Stephen Chapman. Tony ThomasJr. to 3rd.

# Ty Wright doubles (1) on a pop up to shortstop Matthew Cline.

# Steve Clevenger reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by third baseman Taylor Green. Tony ThomasJr. scores. Ty Wright to 3rd.

Interesting 5th for Daytona. A few rarities.

- 2 base sac bunt

- infield double

-double w/ a runner at 3B and no score

-fielder's choice fielded by the 3rd baseman, but a runner gets safely to 3rd base (I'm assuming he threw home and didn't get the guy).

Where do you usually get the information for the minor league starters and such? I'm assuming from the minor league website? (They have been horribly slow, not to mention that it doesn't appear to be working?)

Team web sites usually will have the next day's starter in the post-game write up.

Even that, their websites have also been somewhat slow as well, for some odd reason.

Some good pitching starts from Berg, Caridad and Acosta (who only went 3). Muschko struck out 5 in 3 innings out of the pen for Peoria.

Berg still can't strike out too many guys.

What do you mean by slow? Slow in updating?

btw daytona choked and lost 8-6

Looks like it was Ryan Meyers (came over in the Angel Pagan trade) and Jeremy Papelbon who blew it.

Peoria lost 2-0. Jordan Latham gave up both runs (1 earned). Marwin Gonzalez and Jovan Rosa had the only 2 Chief hits.

Usually that's a clue that his stuff is bad, but I really think he pitches to contact as he is an extreme groundball pitcher. I'd rather he have low strikeout totals than Samardzija.

Thanks for the updates today everyone. Couldn't take time to listen tonight.

Actually I think those two are similar. Each have hard, sinking FBs - ground ball pitchers. Secondary stuff lags behind. Don't get a lot of Ks. Obviously Berg has a much better ground ball rate and Samardzija has better control.

Tennessee loses 3-0. The Smokies only had 3 baserunners - Colvin had a single, Salas a BB and Simokaitis reached on an error.

One of my favorite ex-Cub prospects, Brian Dopirak, got off to a nice start with the Blue Jays' High A ball team. He went 1-3 with a solo DOPESLAP, 2BB and 2K's. I'm really depressed about him no longer being in our system.

Colvin w/ the lone Smokies hit.

looking at that lineup, i have a feeling that there will be a lot of piss-poor offensive outputs from tennessee this year.

Sounds a lot like last year's team.

Amazing start for the minor league teams. Add to the fact that one of our better pitching prosects got busted for taking the juice and it's a tremendous day all around.

And those hits were the first AB of the entire game for Gonzalez, and a leadoff single in the 2nd for Rosa. That's an 0-24 after the 2 hits.

My favorite part from the above...

4. Steve Clevenger, first base

A natural hitter, this former Chipola (Fla.) Junior College star has batted .315 and has more walks (43) than strikeouts (39) in two seasons. That alone makes him stand out in this farm system.

Right...he's the standout in the whole farm system.

I believe the writer was trying to say that Clevenger's patience made him stand out in a system that is typically known for its aggressiveness....not that he is the standout player in the system.

He's not patient at all, though. He simply makes a ton of contact.

Maybe he was saying that it's the only thing he does well. :D

Jody Davis on the Daytona pen and starter Esmailin Caridad's U.S. debut:

Daytona News-Journal"]"I'll tell you, I know our bullpen is better than that," Cubs manager Jody Davis said. "Maybe it was because it was the first game, Opening Night jitters or something. I'm not worried. They're going to get a lot of chances."

...

But Daytona wasn't able to hold the lead after Caridad, a 22-year-old right-hander making his first official start in the United States after three minor-league seasons in Japan, allowed just one run on three hits while striking out three over five innings.

"(Caridad) threw the ball well," Davis said. "It's early in the season, and he was on a five-inning or early pitch count limit. But it was a positive night for him."

Ryan Acosta and Craig Muschko did well for Peoria last night:

Peoria Journal-Star"]"He pitched well and earned that start," Sandberg said. "We're able to keep the other four guys (in the rotation) intact with throwing on the side so we can stay on schedule."

Acosta went the three innings and allowed just two hits.

"I was just being aggressive in going after the hitters," Acosta said. "I went right after them and showed that I'm not scared of them."

The outing should be enough to get Acosta another start as he continues to increase his pitch count.

"It's an opportunity for him," Sandberg said. "It's almost like he was going to be a sixth starter. At this point early in the season, three to four innings is adequate. He was set up (to be) a swing guy to piggyback with another starter."

Muschko came in and threw three innings in relief, an outing that included four straight strikeouts.

The first three came after a fifth-inning leadoff double by Clint Robinson.

"I'm just trying to throw strikes and let those guys get themselves out on a cold night like this," Muschko said.
