I mentioned it before and vance said that he played it a little at AA. Wouldn't it be a solid move for him to do this for his career? Even if he couldn't make it with the Cubs he would be a pretty marketable guy if he could play there, catch in a pinch and do 1st/corner OF's. Who do the Cubs have at third in Iowa?

Fox has logged a little time here or there at 3B but he's primarily stayed at 1B or the corner OF positions. Matt Craig will likely be the starting third baseman at Iowa this coming season.

Does Craig have a shot at making the bigs because if he doesn't, I'm putting Fox there for 50 or so games.

I agree that Craig would make for a better hitter in the big leagues (but I don't think either has a chance to be an everyday guy) but Fox is more likely going to make the bigs because 1) he's already on the 40-man and has been to the bigs and 2) he plays more positions than Craig.

From consensus projections at BCB Craig is projected at 329/421/750 while Fox is 314/429/743. Basically a push.

And from The Baseball Cube Jake Fox has exactly 1 game at 3B in his minor league career.

This sounds like it makes as much sense as the year they sent Craig back to Daytona to learn catcher.

That one game must have been last May in Mississippi, because he played there during one game that I was there.

I think it's easier to teach a player to play third than catch. Also, if third is the only position Craig plays than he has to hope for an injury to Ramirez or he gets traded sometime if he ever wants to play there. Thanks for posting his numbers and I hope they both hit that well or better this year.

Fox has a strong enough arm to play 3rd. I think it's questionable whether he'd ever approach mediocre/average defensively even if he spent years playing nothing but 3rd. But if he wanted to go to extended spring training and work with the 3B guys to try to learn the position, I think that would be an interesting experiment.

But 3rd is still a corner position. His offense at 3rd would have to be pretty good to justify the lack of defense. If his offense improves that much than he'd be a legit corner OF.

It looks like the Cubs still want Casey McGehee to play a bit at 3B too. I think they were hoping to keep Koyie Hill and J.D. Closser with McGehee as a bench player but getting lots of AB's at C, 1B, and 3B. Closser hasn't really looked very good though so McGehee might end up becoming more of a fixture at catcher in Iowa? All speculation on my part though.
