MESA, Ariz.- Cubs reliever Jose Ascanio showed up at camp on Sunday with a black eye after being punched by a would-be robber outside a Scottsdale convenience store.

While information was still sketchy on Sunday, manager Lou Piniella said the incident happened Saturday night.

"He went over to Circle-K last night and evidently somebody … he got punched a few times by a guy who was looking for some money," Piniella said.

I think derwood was pretty dead on, this isn't a huge surprise. All the sudden a bus full of millionaires pulls into town - there's going to be some people who want in on that.

The guy who robbed Colvin, Fox and Samardzija was actually robbing a lot of residents in Mesa before getting into the Cubs clubhouse.

And yet 4 of the 5 people who were robbed are actually the ones who aren't nearly as rich.

Easier targets. THey stole credit cards, right? I'd say you've got a lot better chance of walking into a store and passing off as "tyler colvin" than "Aramis Ramirez"

Looks like the weird ST injuries are already starting... I expect him to go straight to the DL because of this.

Does anyone else picture this scene straight out of Superbad?

I wouldn't mind referring to Ascanio as McCanio or just the more obvious McLovin for his duration with the Cubs.

Yes, yes I did. That's exactly what came to mind.

"Don't you need this tape for evidence?"

"The only thing this is proof of is that you can take a hit like a champ"

WTF? is Mesa the crime capital of the world. The Cubs clubhouse was robbed just before ST started wasn't it?

This incident with Ascanio actually happened in Scottsdale, not Mesa, which actually is surprising. So this seems to be a completely random crime and not someone taking advantage of a "Millionaire" or a Cubs player.

Robber dude used Jeff Samardzija's credit card and, quite frankly, Samardzija is probably as famous as Aramis.
