I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable throwing the years and money at him that it'll take to sign him.

Yeah, he's gotta end up getting somewhere around $20M per year.

There is NO WAY CC is going to get $20 mill, unless it's the Yanks. And IDK if the new Yanks are going to break the bank on a lefty who isn't even in Johan Santana's class. If Johan can't break the $20 mill barrier, then I doubt CC (who has YET to win a Cy Young) gets more then say $15-17 mill per.

Barry Zito got $18M per year and Sabathia is a better pitcher than Zito is.

Nobody even mentioned Santana, really, except for you, when you incorrectly stated that he didn't break the $20M barrier.

First: Let me apologize for not being ACCURATE with my posts.

Second: Technically it was soccr10k who accidently mentions Santana---not by name, but by contract perimeters of what it would take to sign CC.

Third: Rather it was I, or somebody else....Johan was going to be brought into the conversation about CC, and what he would look for in a contract.

A smart GM would only offer CC, what Zito got (seeing as CC and Zito has had parallel careers so far)

The point I was trying to make was...and STILL IS....while players often are overpaid, certain players are not going to live up to his contract, and I believe CC will be one who won't live up to the contract, unless he signs with an NL team.

no, a smart GM would've never offered zito such a large contract. here's the problem with looking at their career stats:

zito's last three years with oakland:

WHIP: 1.394, 1.200, 1.403

ERA+: 101, 113, 116

sabathia the last three years:

WHIP: 1.256, 1.173, 1.141

ERA+: 104, 140, 143

The data above and the graphs show that Zito was actually regressing from early in his career, when his WHIP was anywhere from 1.13 to 1.23. on the other hand, sabathia has drastically cut down his BB rate and has really shown signs of breaking through and becoming an elite pitcher in the past two seasons. if you look at the players' careers as a whole, then they do look very similar, but if sabathia has another excellent year, he'll be well ahead of where zito was when he reached unrestricted free agency.
