First of all, I'm not suggesting this... just throwing it out there. Anyways. Can Nomar still play shortstop with any reasonable chance of not getting hurt? He's been fairly healthy the past two seasons, but that could simply be a result of him playing first and third base. But if it's not, and he's proven he can stay healthy, is he worth giving a shot at shortstop? The Dodgers would probably love to get rid of him and put Andy LaRoche at third, where Nomar is blocking him.

Tear the idea apart or endorse it. I don't care. Just something I concocted during lecture.

No. We've been down that route. Nomar's extreme drop in power numbers over the last 2 seasons raises some serious questions, and I think he's happy to finally make it on the West Coast.

He had a .699 OPS last season

Ryan Theriot had a .672 OPS last season.

Nomar is a complete butcher in the field, Theriot is adequate. Nomar made 8.2 million last year. Theriot made 390k

Hey, I guess if Derrek Lee can play LF...

Drop in power the last two seasons?

IsoP:

1996 - .230

1997 - .228

1998 - .261

1999 - .246

2000 - .227

2001 - .181 (21 G)

2002 - .218

2003 - .223

2004 - .169

2005 - .169

2006 - .202

2007 - .088

Yes, 2007 was absolutely horrible. But people seem to have completely forgotten about 2006. His power rebounded in a significant way, and he hit .303/.367/.505 on the season. If he has another season like that in his bat, the difference between him and Theriot on defense (and in their contracts) isn't nearly close enough for Theriot to cover the gap.

You realize that that was a tongue-in-cheek shot at how bad Bonds is these days in the field, right?

Best case scenario: Nomar plays about the same number of games he has played the last two seasons and gets 450 AB's at 2006 levels.

That's the biggest problem with Nomar. First, you have to assume he's going to have another bounce back season at age 34. Then, he has to play some sort of competent defense at short when he hasn't played there in 2 years (and has had a lot of leg injuries), and didn't play particularly good defense at 3rd base last year. Then, he has to stay as healthy at SS as he did at 1st or 3rd. Even if he does all that, he's still not anywhere near a fulltime player and Theriot would get 200 AB's at SS anyway.

The odds are that 1 of those 3 things are going to go wrong, and he either is not going to be healthy, not able to play short, or not able to hit well anymore. He is still more valuable to the Dodgers than he is worth in a trade because of all the huge potential negatives at moving him to SS.
