i know he just retired, but how about Craig Biggio?

3000 hits = lock for the writers.

Also in his favor is that Bill James thought very highly of him in the historical abstract.

Smoltz has as good a case as any pitcher outside of Maddux.

Clemens?

Unit?

Clemens no longer plays. I think Smoltz has as good a case as Randy Johnson. He has the great years in the pen, but if he didn't and remained healthy in the rotation, his numbers would be right on with RJs except for about 750Ks. Plus, Smoltz has to get some credit for still being a top 20 pitcher this late in his career. Unit hasn't been greatly effective the last 3-4 years.

I think Smoltz should be in, but his case isn't as good as Johnson's, especially in the eyes of the writers. Five Cy Young's and four other times in the top three makes him 1st ballot for sure.

Yeah, I remember there being an entire section about how Biggio was more valuable than Griffey Jr.

He had Biggio at number 35 overall.

Wanted to add Ichiro to this list.

Ichiro? No chance. He's only played here for 7 years.

They can make an exception to the rule. If his legs were ripped off tomorrow he'd be a hall of famer, I assure you.

No chance? I think Ichiro is a lock if he retires tomorrow.

Why?

He has 1600 hits. That's about half of what it typically takes to get in. He'll probably get in if he plays long enough, but I don't see any possible way he'd get elected if he retired tomorrow.

Voters know he spent 9 seasons in Japan and won't hold that against him

He needs to play three more years to qualify.

I had no idea. You have to play ten years?

Yep.

Although I believe the HoF can make exceptions for players whose careers are tragically cut short. For example, if Pujols were to die tomorrow (and no, I'm not wishing that on anybody), he'd probably get in based on how insanely good his numbers have been his first seven years.

The HOF has and does make exceptions. Ichiro's lack of 10 years would be little different than all Negro League players having less than 10 years.

Curt Schilling

Derek Jeter

Craig Biggio (although hes gone now)

Mariano Rivera

Jeff Kent

Mike Mussina

Frank Thomas (easily)

I don't think Manny Ramirez gets in.

I assume that's not your complete list.

You gotta have The Big Hurt on top of that list.

I considered him obviously. But then I looked at it, and only three times in his career did he play 1st base over 100 games in a season.

Doesn't matter. He's going to get in.

Thats the list I made while looking at the first post in the thread.

gotcha. 'Cause I'm pretty sure Maddux & a few others both will get in and belongs there.

Why do you think that? His stats look pretty damn good to me. Throw into it that he played for the Red Sox and was on two of their WS teams....

I didn't say he wouldn't. He was on my initial list. The list that I didn't have him on was the list of dominant first baggers of the 90's.

for a CO with bad defense hes going to need more than 500 HRs. I think he should get in, I just dont think he does. Another name I'll throw out there is Jim Edmonds. He probably will not get in, but he's probably the second best CF of his generation ahead of Lofton and Williams -- unless I am completely forgetting someone

Manny is at 491 HR right now. I think he'll get 500 and beyond.

Really hadn't thought much about Edmonds. His WARP3 (106) is only 2 points lower than Manny's.

Of course. However, considering his age, if he just voluntarily quit tomorrow they would hold that against him. As you alluded to earlier, if something tragic were to happen to him, he would get in based on what he has done so far. That's what I was trying to get at.

Duh.

What? Manny doesn't get in? I agree with quite a few things you break down, Meph, but this is not one. Manny will get to 500 HR this year and has 2200+ hits. Career .313 average, 154 OPS+ and he doesn't seem to be close to retirement. And he's won WS titles in Boston.......... he'll get in.

Arod is a thirdbasemen not a shortstop... what about Carlos Zambrano or Kerry Wood?

To date, ARod has played 1271 games at SS and won two gold gloves there (I know, I know). He's played 621 games at third. Now, he might end up with more games played at third... but there's always the chance he gets moved to first before that happens. He still goes in as a SS until he plays more games somewhere else.
