I'm bored, so I thought it'd be fun to do a very early mock that we can look back on when the actual draft happens (to see how much it's changed--for kicks and giggles). Since there aren't too many people on the forum (or who follow this type of stuff), I say we just have alternating people pick (meaning the same person can't pick back to back). With so few people that browse here, there will probably be only 4 or 5 of us picking all-together, so don't be afraid if you and another person are moving it along quickly. When we get to our pick (19), we will have an open vote for who you would like us to take (the voting period will last 5 days), and whoever tallies up the most votes at the end of the 5 days will be our pick.

If this actually works out decent, we can do a couple more as the college season progresses.

Here's the draft order:

01 Tampa Bay Devil Rays

02 Pittsburgh Pirates

03 Kansas City Royals

04 Baltimore Orioles

05 San Francisco Giants

06 Florida Marlins

07 Cincinnati Reds

08 Chicago White Sox

09 Washington Nationals

10 Houston Astros

11 Texas Rangers

12 Oakland Athletics

13 St. Louis Cardinals

14 Minnesota Twins

15 Los Angeles Dodgers

16 Milwaukee Brewers

17 Toronto Blue Jays

18 METS--from Atl

19 Chicago Cubs

I'll start it off.

Here's Brewerfan.net's projected first round if you need any help:

http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewDraftArchive.do?draftId=6

With the first pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays select:

Pedro Alvarez, Vanderbilt.

--Tampa Bay takes the biggest impact bat available and will find a spot for him when they need to. With a surplus of young/minor league pitching at their disposal, they can afford to take his bat and worry about position later.

Next up, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Anyone? :D

I say Pittsburgh finally goes BPA.

Pittsburgh: SS Tim Beckham, Griffin (GA)

Wow, I didn't realize Crow was THAT highly regarded.

Yeah, he's an interesting case. Mixed results in college, but dominant at the Cape. I think alot of people are (possibly prematurely) projecting him to dominate for Mizzou next season.

Similar to Brandon Morrow two years ago. Morrow had a 9+ ERA his sophomore year at Cal. Blew up in the Cape that summer. Continued to mow down hitters the next season (14ks in his first start iirc).

1. Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Pedro Alvarez, 1B/LF - Vanderbilt

2. Pittsburgh Pirates - Tim Beckham, SS - Griffin HS (GA)

3. Kansas City Royals - Aaron Crow, RHP - Missouri

FYI: I hope to have my first mock the year done by monday

Right now I think the top five will probably go something like this:

1. Rays: {Beckham, Alvarez, Matusz}

2. Pirates: {Alvarez, Beckham, Hosmer}

3. Royals: {Crow, Melville, Matusz}

4. Orioles: {Alvarez, Beckham, Crow, Matusz}

5. Giants: {Alvarez, Beckham, Hosmer, Smoak}

Posted

Yeah Meph, I definately think Baltimore goes with Matusz if he's there.

With the 4th pick, Baltimore selects Brian Matusz out of San Diego.

With Bedard likely gone soon or by the deadline, Baltimore goes with a somewhat similiar pitcher who figures to be a quick riser through the minors. If the Bedard to Seattle trade goes down, Baltimore has a nice young core that has the potential to help the big league club rebuild alot quicker than most young guys (Weiters, Matusz, Adam Jones).

So far:

1. Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Pedro Alvarez, 1B/LF - Vanderbilt

2. Pittsburgh Pirates - Tim Beckham, SS - Griffin HS (GA)

3. Kansas City Royals - Aaron Crow, RHP - Missouri

4. Baltimore Orioles - Brian Matusz, LHP - University of San Diego

San Fran on the clock.

5. San Francisco Giants - Eric Hosmer, 1B - American Heritage HS (FL)

The Giants have a pitching laden farm system and a pitching laden major league team. With the exception of Villalona they have no impact power bats on the horizon. Eric Hosmer could be the perfect guy to complete their 2011 infield of Villalona-Burris-Noonan.

6. Florida Marlins - Tim Melville, RHP - Holt HS (Wentzville, MO)

Justin Smoak is probably the best rated player remaining but that doesn't fall in line with Florida's M.O. Melville looks like one of the highest rated HS pitchers with top-5 potential. I also considered HS RHP Gerrit Cole (Orange, CA).

Reds draft & expect to sign Perry under slot, Perry becomes a starter for AZ coming off an impressive Spring and gets drafted top 10 picks.

8. Chicago White Sox - Christian Friedrich, LHP - Eastern Kentucky

Although Cole is the better prospect, Chicago opts to get some kind of pitching into their system with Friedrich who has dominated since he step foot at Kentucky. KW has taken alot of heat for trading their two best pitching prospects, so he opts to go with the college guy who can get the show very quick thanks to his dominating curve and improving fastball and change. Smoke would also make sense, but with no pitching depth whatsoever in the minors, the Sox are almost a lock to go pitcher.

After two drafts loaded with prep pitching, the Nationals will probably go with a similar draft that they had in 2005. This pick will come down to the best remaining bat, most likely at the prep level. They would love for Hosmer to fall, but he won't. The decision will likely come down to either Harold Martinez or Kyle Skipworth. Skipworth has the tools to stay behind the plate and has impressive power potential - as does Martinez, but the position premium trumps. If the Nats don't believe Skipworth can stick behind the plate, they would go with Martinez.

Posted

at this point i think the reds would take meyer, melville or cole. the sox have taken pitching extensively in the early rounds the last three years. They havent taken a position player in the first three rounds since 04 with Josh Fields. This year they have to address that and they do have quite the stockpile of decent arms in their system. The offensive side is desolate. theyll go best position player available, regardless of hs/college. theyd probably jump on alonso. the marlins won't go after melville. they'd take cole over him. melville will probably be the matt harvey of this draft. he hasnt signed with boras, but the nc commitment is going to make teams hesitant regardless of who his agent is. cole will be cheaper (and isnt a downgrade really).

and with the next pick the astros would scoop up either melville or cole after being MIA for the draft last year.

It's too bad UCLA commitments don't make teams hesitant. I'd take Gerrit Cole here too. Smoak continues to fall.

10. Houston Astros - Gerrit Cole, RHP - Orange Lutheran HS (CA)

11. Texas Rangers - Alex Meyer, RHP - Greensburg HS (IN)

The Rangers would love to continue stockpiling power arms with front of the rotation potential. After drafting Kasey Kiker 12th overall in 2006 they've seen him develop into one of the premier mid-level pitching prospects in the game. Kiker's a true power lefty who projects as a potential #2 starter, although he's a little on the small side. Scott Kazmir is a great comp for him. The 2007 draft saw the Rangers taking three talented prep pitchers. Blake Beavan's a big guy with electric stuff who also profiles as a number 2 starter. Jake Peavys still the best comp for him. They then grabbed Michael Main, whose a tremendous talent and could easily end up at the front of a major league rotation or an elite back end of the pen kind of guy. Neil Ramirez is more of a middle of the rotation guy, but they will probably go power prep arm again. Meyer *may* be the best available, but they'll certainly jump on Cole, Melville if they last. They tend to love the athletic prep pitchers. Aaron Hicks is also a candidate here.

Smoak is tough for them to pass up. If he falls, they may jump on him. However, with the A's on the clock. Beane gets his second crack at Smoak, and will certainly take him. If Smoak is gone, the A's could look at Ross, Alonso, but also don't be surprised to see them take a good long hard look at Aaron Hicks. He's the kind of prep pitcher that Beane would pick.

Posted

Meph, I know Hicks is a hell of a pitcher as well but wouldn't you say he profiles more as a CF now? I think i've read at BA, while his arm is obviously superb, he's got some early control problems, though I obviously don't know how serious. Seems like you can't go too wrong with him at either position though, making him an intruiging guy. Either plus plus D in center with a plus plus arm,with gap power and plus plus speed, or (if he can control it) a 95 mph heater with that power curve that's been talked about.

1. Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Pedro Alvarez, 1B/LF - Vanderbilt

2. Pittsburgh Pirates - Tim Beckham, SS - Griffin HS (GA)

3. Kansas City Royals - Aaron Crow, RHP - Missouri

4. Baltimore Orioles - Brian Matusz, LHP - San Diego

10. Houston Astros - Gerrit Cole, RHP - Orange Lutheran HS (CA)

11. Texas Rangers - Alex Meyer, RHP - Greensburg HS (IN)

12. Oakland A's - Justin Smoak, 1B - South Carolina

Seems like they'd either go Alonso or Smoak, and in the end Beane goes with the sexier pick who's one of the safest bets to become a major league middle of the order hitter. While Alonso's numbers are insane (and I do like him alot), I still think Smoak ends up being a safer bet.

They con't their run of college pitchers early and select an Adam Wainwright clone. They also looked at Harold Martinez and Dennis Raben.

Minnesota goes with a SS/3B who immediately would become their best position prospect at both positions (and probably overall). Could have gone pitcher as well, but they decide to take the chance on Martinez's huge potential and great makeup.

Hicks profiles best on the mound, in my opinion. He has tons of projectability, the makings of a plus curveball which may be the best prep version in the draft and a plus fastball. The Dodgers will continue their run on two pitch prep guys.

Brewers pick up a lefty with nasty offspeed stuff, and who can contribute to their bullpen pretty quickly. With so many early picks, they can afford to go safe here and still take some risks later in the draft. While he may be pushed quick as a reliever, a starting role isn't out of reach in the future for St. Clair. I was tempted to go Sonny Gray here as well.
