This is no more meaningful than when they tried Theriot as an OF last year..they like versatility. That's it. From the Cubs perspective, the more positions he knows, the more valuable of a utility player he is.

I really dislike how often they try this nonsense.

I'm willing to bet Cedeno would be fine in the outfield defensively. However, he's a below average hitting major league shortstop, so he's not going to win any Silver Slugger awards in the outfield either.

I guess this increases his flexibility, but I'd almost prefer he focus on hitting instead of learning a new position.

Eh, if he was a viable option in CF and we could keep him instead of Fuld, opening up a roster spot for another hitter off the bench, its worth the expiriment.

Right now, our bench, assuming 12 pitchers:

Murton- LF

Cedeno- SS

Ward- 1B

Fuld- CF

Blanco- C

Heck, even if we want to go get Roberts or a SS, we need to bump a player from the bench, since I doubt we carry 11 pitchers. If you dump Cedeno you have no backup SS. Dump Fuld and you don't have a backup CF (though technically Fukudome or Soriano could shift over there). But if Cedeno can play a passable CF, you are fine.

yeah but fuld would actually be pretty good as a 4th/5th OF; cedeno probably wont be a good fielder and definitely won't be a good hitter

Wait. You are comfortable enough with Fuld to hold up the necessary hitting attributes for a 5th OF, but not Cedeno?

Cedeno to OF?

wtf?

Where have you been "Aramis"? I think this was reported at least a month ago that the Cubs were toying with the idea of trying Cedeno out in the OF. Mainly in CF, if it works out.

I believe in the Minor Leagues forum, Raisin has been talking about Cedeno playing CF in winter leagues.

Is it possible that Cedeno was playing some outfield because some veteran guy who has a bit better MLB track record was gobbling up all the SS time and Cedeno would have to shift to the outfield to get more PT?
