Cardinals signed first baseman Josh Phelps to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Phelps hit .351/.463/.649 in 77 at-bats for the Pirates after being let go by the Yankees last season, but it looks like no one wanted to bring him in to compete for a starting job at first base or DH. If he makes the Cards, he'll serve as a pinch-hitter and emergency third catcher, leaving him with no fantasy value unless Albert Pujols gets hurt.

If he could play any of the outfield corners he would have been a nice pickup for the Cubs with his right handed power off the bench and his ability to catch will be nice once Blanco breaks down.

The Cardinals are becoming quite the collection of rejects and hooligans.

Izzy (the crappy SS, but I guess the RP too), D'Angelo, Clement, now this guy...

All this = 2008 WS Champs

Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people loved Josh Phelps' bat. They kept saying "Josh Phelps, Josh Phelps."
