That's not necessarily true. They are guaranteed a #1 pick from the Sandwich round, but if the team that signs Santana has a first round pick from #1-15 overall, it is protected, and the Twins would get that signing teams 2nd rounder instead.

And quote Frankly, that is a big part of the reason Santana probably will not get traded. Plus it is better PR to say they didn't trade him because they were still hoping they could sign him to a long term deal if/when he leaves the following offseason.

 

In order to trade him the Twins will have to get more back than the two draft picks. Which no team wants to give up since they will have to pay him 20 mil a year for atleast 6 years.

if i'm the twins, there's no way this deal goes down without either ellsbury or buchholz, if not both. And I'd really, really push hard for Ellsbury.

 

Ellsbury, Crisp (why is he considered a valuable trade piece? he's not that good), Michael Bowden and either Jed Lowrie or Lars Anderson - preferably Lowrie given the Twins' need for middle infield help. That gets it done if I'm the Twins.
