The The Reds picked up the option on Scott Hatteberg.

 

I know what Red fans are thinking. Scott Hatteberg...hits well enough, gets on base, has some pop, mashes righties...why not? Nice player to have on the roster as an insurance back-up and pinch hitter.

 

That's all well and good, but poor Joey Votto. Unless he goes bonkers Ryan Braun style, Reds fans are soon going to become familiar with the concept of "Dusty-proofing" a roster.

 

Of course they will realize that soon enough with the versatile Juan Castro playing every other day.

Still though, its a value proposition. If the RedSox don't resign Lowell and don't get ARod, I'm sure they'd like Hatteberg for 1B and move Youk across to 3B. Also, if the Dbacks don't want to go 2 years with Clark, I'm sure they'd like to have Hatteberg. In this day and age there are actually smart guys running teams who would what a guy like Hatteberg brings to the table. Unfortunately, the Reds don't have one of those GMs.
