Hoops,

I would rather get Renteria because of the cost, but when I saw on a few sites that the Orioles might have to listen to offers on Bedard because of their situation, I thought maybe we could obtain two players in one big deal. Renteria for Marshall plus Theriot?

I was hoping Atlanta might take Marshall, Cedeno and another pitching prospect. Don't know if that would fly for the Braves. I'd like for the Cubs to keep Theriot as a utility guy.

Who else is in the market to upgrade at SS this offseason?

Cards?

Astros?

White Sox?

Giants?

Nats?

Reds?

Blue Jays?

A's?

Twins?

I think all those teams could use a SS, except for the Reds. Keppinger or Alex Gonzalez will start there. I think that will drive Renteria's price up. I think it will take a starter the Braves can plug in their rotation and another starter pretty close, that can compete for their 5th spot at some point in the season.

I'd trade Marshall, Patterson, and a guy like Atkins/Holliman for Renteria and a lower level prospect.

How about we trade DLee. Soriano, Marshall, Samardzjia, Maquis and Colvin for Billingsley, Loney, Kemp, Ethier, LaRoche, and Kershaw. Sign ARod. Trade Pie, Jones, Veal, LaRoche for Santana.
Now all you need to do is get the Dodgers' and Twins' GMs drunk enough to do it. :D

I read one site that suggested that the Braves might take a young major league pitcher and another major league ready prospect for Renteria. If that's true, Marshall plus Cedeno fills that bill.

Cubs trade: Marshall, Ohman, Patterson, Jones, Veal, Cedeno

Cubs get: Tejada and Bedard

I'll ask my usual questions when I see this type of proposal:

A) Would you consider this a good trade if you were a fan of the other team?

B) Do you really think the other team couldn't get a better offer for the listed players?

To answer your questions:

A) It depends on whether I was the type of fan that realizes that the Orioles need to start over. Obviously, if I was the kind of fan that thought the Orioles could be and would be competitive in 2008 or 2009, it would be a bad deal. I've been a Cub fan for over 50 years and in hindsight I wish the Cubs would have traded off their stars and started over many times in those 50+ years. The Orioles have no hope of being competitive in that division for the forseeable future.

B) I would think the Orioles can probably get a better offer by trading Tejada and Bedard seperately, but you never know how teams match up in the trade market. Also, MacPhail having first hand information on all of these players and their potential could be an advantage or a disadvantage. As I pointed out in my initial post, the Orioles would be getting a lot of young players that have the potential to be good. In 2-3 years the players they receive could be 40% of their rotation, a starting SS and CF, and a solid loogy.

Anyone remember when we could have given up Prior and prospects for Tejeda and Bedard? Makes me sad to remember it.

Dude you just ruined my day.

P.S. Do you go to Marquette?

If it's any consolation there was never really any chance that the O's would have actually made such a trade.

I doubt that deal could have ever worked out given how especially stubborn the Orioles were over Tejada at the time. It likely never progressed beyond the rumor stage.

The way I remember the Cubs offered a deal around Prior. Baltimore said change that to Zambrano. The Cubs said then throw in Bedard. Baltimore said Buh Bye.

Prior couldn't bring Tejeda alone.

Baltimore needs a CF, and I think they would require Pie over EPatt. They would also want Marmol, whom they could slide into the closer role, pushing Chris Ray to setup. I think they'd also need a replacement starter ala Marshall/Gallagher.

This is just for Bedard, but I think it's a good package.

BTW, why does everyone act like we have nothing valuable to offer in a trade? What if Marmol was a Yankee and people on this board wanted to acquire him to close for us? How many people here would claim "Marmol isn't going anywhere, he is young, dirt cheap and had obscene #s".?

Here's what I think we should do. We should stop trading for guys at the top of their value and stop trading guys at the bottom of their value. Every year on message boards I see people clamoring for whoever had the good year that year to be traded for.

Anyway, more specifically in the topic, the Prior/Orioles deal was just one of those throwaway rumors, like "Lastings Milledge could've brought the Mets Joe Blanton but Minaya didn't pull the trigger, oh, what a bastard, fire him."

I'm not a huge fan of Bedard. If the Orioles were smart they'd trade him now for a huge bounty. He's not a guy I'd personally want to pay $20 million a year to because I don't think he'll repeat his 2007. I think he'll be a lesser A. J. Burnett - some flashes of brilliance, frustrations with consistency and staying healthy. Let someone else take the gamble, I don't trust the organization any more to make big trades and not get taken.

But man, if you were the GM and pulled that (assuming a Santana extention is part of the deal), you could just sit back, relax and watch the trophies come in for years and years.

Assuming a lot of things. But I'm more skeptical; we've been paper champs before.

As long as we're tossing out half-assed trade ideas that look sort of logical but rather aren't, how about this one:

Felix Pie, Rich Hill, and Carlos Marmol for Nick Swisher.

Now that's not junk for treasure. Hill and Marmol are proven and Pie still has good value. Rich Hill could be Barry Zito in that park, or better. Marmol could close and Billy Beane (who thinks closers are overrated) could trade Huston Street for a treasure trove.

Meanwhile, a switch-hitter who takes 100+ walks and hit 35 home runs while playing in Oakland is a 1.000+ OPS season waiting to happen in Wrigley Field batting between Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez. There's your right fielder, there's your thunder from the left side, also he's an "athlete" so Hendry will buy into it.

Now in actuality I don't think that's a good idea, I don't think Swisher can keep his BA high enough to be a .950 OPS guy, let alone 1.000, and I think if you're giving up guys like Marmol and Hill you could do better than Swisher, who sometimes looks like he could go the Brad Wilkerson route, and I'm not a huge fan of switch-hitters who hit lefties better than righties. But I am on board with getting a 100+ walk right fielder more than most of these ideas.

Bedard is not a one-year wonder. He's been a solid pitcher for a lousy Orioles team for the past 3 years. Also, he's been putting up good numbers while playing in the AL East as opposed to the NL Central. If you don't like the deal, so be it, but you can't argue the fact that Bedard is a good pitcher.

I wouldn't exactly consider Joba and Marmol interchangable. Thats a fairly ridiculous notion.

Its not that we don't have anything of value, its that compared to the players that are on the other side of the deal, the value isn't close to equivalent.
