Have we ever been pleasantly surprised by a PTBNL? I think we traded Dwaine Bacon to the Angels for a PTBNL as then actually got nothing. And good 'ol Clint Brannon.

You forgot that is has to be a pitcher with injury issues, preferrably recovering from rotator cuff surgery.

Hart was a PTBNL for the sake of not having to protect him in Rule 5. I think Harben was viewed as a pleasant surprise in return for Nevin last year. I think a couple people were happy to get Eric Eckenstahler as a PTBNL for Felix Sanchez.

 

This are really exceptions though, as you can't expect much of an impact guy as a PTBNL. Especially in return for Cesar Izturis, after Pittsburgh fired their braindead GM.

This topic makes me wonder. When they say player X was traded to team Y for a PTBNL or cash what is the least amount of cash sent back in return for a player? In the case of Izturis maybe $20 was ok.
