Ah, but will Jocketty be back? If he isn't, Tony most certainly will not.

Allegations of a front office rift give legitimacy to rumors of Jocketty's departure. At GRB we have an interview with assistant GM John Mozeliak and I asked him about this article:

DeWitt's naming of Jeff Luhnow as vice president in charge of scouting and player development was carried out over Jocketty's objection and at the expense of Jocketty confidante Bruce Manno, who stood alongside Jocketty during last October's World Series parade. The resulting chill, according to club sources, has split the front office into factions that rarely intersect.

"It's not a healthy environment when you're worried about who you're seen speaking to," a Cardinals minor-league employee recently acknowledged. "If you speak to someone, you risk making someone else in the front office mad. If you don't speak, you alienate the person in front of you. It's tough when you're caught in the middle of something like that."

DeWitt mandated last September's realignment to streamline communication and create shared purpose between player development and amateur scouting, a goal supported within the organization.

However, implementation created another divide, leaving Jocketty and Luhnow lords of separate fiefdoms. Assistant general manager John Mozeliak typically serves as a liaison between the two. Jocketty describes the structure as "a moot point."

The Wolfman calls it right. Who do you want to manage and GM?

I'd like them to keep Mozeliak as GM and either keep Tony or hire someone who handles pitching staffs well.

Tony has worn out a lot of tread this year with the DUI and everything, but he and Duncan are a package deal and I'd hate to lose Duncan.

BTW - If you want to ask questions of a real life GM, even if it is the Cardinals GM, you can do so here. There are a bunch of users with dual memberships both here and there, so I'm sure I or someone who already has an account could ask a question if one of you doesn't want to deal with the annoyance of registering just to ask one question.

I see LaRussa/Duncan going to the Giants, maybe 2009 if not next year.

Would Jose Oquendo be one of the favorites for the manager job?

He has been regarded as the heir apparent for many years. That could change if they go out of house to get a new GM and let him bring in his own guy.

Based on what was discussed on the radio today, I would be surprised if Mozeliak is retained as the GM. It sounds like they really want to go in the direction of a guy who is really into player development, a la Paul DePodesta. Not to say they'll become the Marlins or Twins, but as a Cardinal fan, you have to be disappointed in the production of the minors the last few years. (Not that the Cubs have been much better)

I have been pleased with Duncan, Ankiel, Wainwright, the reserves (Ryan, Ludwick, etc) and Molina, but it'd be nice to develop some impact position player studs. Those don't grow on trees though.

Well, within a year or 2 when Rasmus sticks, you should have two impact position studs for the decade. That easily beats the Cubs 0 for the decade.

I'm about as excited as I let myself get for a prospect.
