well apparently froemming's crew is going to do one of the NLDS - get ready folks.

Let's just hope that Bruce isn't calling balls and strikes for Jason Marquis. Fortunately we don't have any black starting pitchers for that other ump on the crew to screw over.

Why?! Is some sort of a senority factor at work here? For, if its based upon quality Froemming would be no where near a playoff series. He's cleary one of the worst, if not the worst Umpire in Baseball anyone with eyes can see that.

Got to keep that crew away from San Diego after what happened last weekend.

I think he wants to know why Froemming gets a playoff series when it's quite clear he is terrible.

Mets most likely winning this afternoon. If the Phillies and Pads lose tonight, I'm going to be one nervous Cubs fan...

The most unlikely playoff scenario:

Mets win 2

Phillies win 1

Padres lose 2

Rockies win 2

All finish with identical 89-73 records.

Monday playoff: Mets defeat Phillies

Tuesday-Wednesday playoffs: Phillies defeat Padres and Rockies.

Cubs head to New York for a game on Thursday.

At this point, I'd take anyone not named the Philadelphia Phillies or Colorado Rockies, at least in the NLDS.

got to disagree I'll take the Phillies no matter how hot they are, we have hitstorically played big against the Phils when it mattered, in fact our two largest come backs in the last four years have been against them.

I think the bigger question is to look at it from their point of view who would they rather play? Are all of them looing at us as the push over team?

They're working the Padres/Brewers series, so I don't think MLB thinks it's an issue.

We should dominate the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 5 game series. Seriously, we can all agree that they're the luckiest team still in it. Come on, as Sean Marshall said, we should be hoping to play them!
90-70 isn't lucky. Best team in the NL, isn't lucky. People have said that for months, still wrong.

Now, who is pitching for you guys Game 1, 2, 3? Assuming we meet up.

1: Webb vs --

2: Davis vs --

3: No idea vs. --

The DBacks have given up more runs than they've allowed. They're clearly a lucky ass team.

Generally yes, but the DBacks are built to win close games. Probably the best 7-8-9 bullpen this side of the Padres (maybe better?). They have their holes (2-3-4-5 starters are not the best, but they mostly get the job done). Plus the backend of the DBacks rotation isn't even relevant in this discussion because I'm guessing it would be Webb, Davis, Livan, Webb, Davis. We beat Webb once this year, but hes still a tough matchup for our team. Davis is a lefty, and as you know you can throw stats away when we face lefties.

Make no bones about it, the DBacks would be a very very tough matchup.

I'm not sure we'll get Webb on three day's rest. I'm guessing we'll Owings in Game 4 and Webb in Game 5.

They are definitely a tough matchup. Hopefully if the D-Backs go with the pitching rotation you mentioned the Cubs can get to Webb when he's pitching on 3 days rest in game 4. Davis is the type of guy who can really give the Cubs trouble, although the lineup that faced him in August won't be quite the same as would likely face him in the playoffs.

The Padres are right on their pythag record. Fans of every team, every year, try and rationalize why it doesn't apply to their team, but there's probably not much skill to getting outscored and winning 90 games. There's no leveraging that accounts for that, and it's not out of the realm of possibility for a team to happen into a weird run distribution or just luck their way into a discrepancy like that. The 2006 Indians come to mind as a team that found themselves on the wrong side of the bell curve. Look at them now, four games over their pythag and clinched the division.

DBacks fans should take solace in the fact that it really just doesn't matter. They have had a good year, and their young offense should improve.

As for the playoffs, it doesn't really matter who's playing who in a short series. Enjoy the heightened atmosphere.

But your saying with a team with a acceptable 1-2-3 rotation a horrible 4-5 and a great back end of the rotation cant win a bunch of 2-1, 4-3, 3-1 games and then lose a lot of 11-1, 8-2, etc. games. I'm not saying luck doesn't play a factor. It does. But without statistical research to back me up, it seems rather plausable that some teams are built to deviate away from the pythag trend than others.

If the Mets can rally to win the NL East, MLB couldn't ask for anything more. 4 playoff series involving New York, New York, Boston, and Chicago. I would imagine this could be one of the highest rated Divisional Series ever.

Somewhat off topic but I need some help.

When would the NLDS start, regardless of who we play? Also, would we be playing at Wrigley Saturday or Sunday?

EDIT - How about game times (I suppose they haven't been announced yet but whoever knows this from previous years)?

Plans are fully underway. No tickets and a 3-year old in tow. Bring it on.

They weren't built that way, and even if they were built to be outscored and still win (whatever that means, all teams want -- and some have -- three great relievers), they'd have to get seriously lucky to explain double digit games.

And of course it looks like they are using terrible pitchers in blowouts. Let's think about that for a second.

Any idea on game times?

Not yet. I'm guessing we'll find out on Monday once the matchups are set.

Any clue as to what has been the case in the past?

Could he possibly be doing the non-Cubs NLDS?

Brewers just tied it up in the 9th.. if they win today playing the Mets or Phillies suddenly becomes pretty possible.

Go Padres.

Padres lose.

So will they throw Cy Peavy out there tomorrow?

I think Bud Black already said he would not use Peavy if they had already clinched at least a tie. I think they have done that so I would say it will be Tomco tomorrow.

I think that's the right decision.

Sorry, I've been drinking all day, so my brain is kinda mush, but, am I right in saying that regardless of how the other divisional/wildcard races play out, the Cubs will host games 3 & 4 on Saturday & Sunday, & that we'll be playing the NL West winner?
