The season gets started today. Ryan Harvey and Nate Samson will be on the Honolulu Sharks and the Sharks play at 6 pm HST (i.e. 11 pm in Chicago).

Here's a preview of the HWB from Baseball Prospectus. The relevant parts:

After that, it’s a pair of disappointing first-round picks, highlighted by Cubs’ right fielder Ryan Harvey, who continues to show plus-plus power but no knowledge of the strike zone, and 2006 Boston first-round pick Jason Place, who is coming off a rough full-season debut at Greenville, with a .214/.298/.359 line and 160 strikeouts in 129 games.

The Sharks will also have C Matt Wieters.

Let me know if there are any players you guys want me to add from other teams - Japan or the U.S. I'll definitely list Matt Wieters' lines since I'm sure some of you will be interested in that.

HawaiiBaseball.com[/url]"]Fans in attendance were treated to a career milestone for Sharks designated hitter Matt Wieters. The switch-hitting catcher picked up his first career hit at the professional level after lacing a line drive up the middle off reliever Shane Lindsay in the second inning. Wieters has drawn a great deal of attention after being selected as the No. 5 overall pick by Baltimore in the 2007 amateur draft, and inking a professional contract which includes a bountiful $6 million signing bonus. On the evening, Wieters went 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored and just missed hitting his first home run on a long fly ball to the warning track just short of the 387-foot sign in right-center field.

DH M. Wieters (Baltimore) 1/2, 2 R, BB

Overall: 1/3, K, 3 BB, E, 2 PB

Raisin, could you add Ben Snyder to your updates. I believe he plays for the Beach Boys hes a starting pitcher in the Giants system, pitched for the Augusta GreenJackets.

Thanks!

did Wieters never play in the minors this year?

No, he did batting practice and bullpen catching for the last week of the Orioles' short-season team but didn't get into a single game.

This is just like Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain who signed too late to play last year and made his pro debut in Hawai'i.

I thought there was a lot of talk he was going to Hawaii to try his hand at pitching. This is kind of a disappointment, I've seen enough of him as a hitter. Warner Madrigal of the Angels is the last outfielder converted to a pitcher I can recall off the top of my head, his numbers as an outfielder were going nowhere, but with Cedar Rapids he's got 20 saves and a 2.07 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 61 innings with a positive G/F ratio. No matter the level it's still more promise than he ever showed as an outfielder.

I was kind of hoping the same for Harvey, there were a number of posts on here that made it sound like it was for certain. Too bad.

Once we learned that he was heading to Hawai'i, we knew that he was sticking in the OF for at least one more year. There's just no way any team would let a player convert positions in a winter league, he'd be at instructs.

Anyways, it's always been speculation that he might convert and thought has been that the time might be drawing nearer for Harvey. I don't remember any posts making it certain.
