Tim, if it's possible, you should do like a "weekend preview" or something so everyone can see what Premium looks like. I'm guessing you'd see quite a few other people sign up once they see how good Premium is compared to the regular forums.

No offense, but this kind of attitude irritates me a bit. Do you like the site as a whole? Because I'm fronting a bunch of money each month to keep it running. If you like the site as a whole, it would be nice if you ponied up the cash to help support it.

Posts like this make me think that maybe I should make it so that people only get a certain number of posts from a given IP address before they have to sign up for premium to continue.

It's $5 a month. It's less than going to Burger King or McDonalds for a meal. You've been posting at a break-neck speed. It's pretty obvious that you enjoy the site.

The point of Premium isn't to get perks with a value equal to your investment. The point of Premium is to support the site, which Tim otherwise has to pay out of his own pocket. The features ou get are really intended to be a small token of appreciation, much like the gifts for supporting PBS during their pledge drives.

I'm not criticizing you for that; that's why Premium is optional in the first place (as opposed to this being a strictly pay site). I'm simply commenting on your post, which seemed like you saying your motivation for buying Premium would be based on how much you value the additional features.

I'm assuming that some of this extra use is down to school holidays - which will be over soon (I think).

As for this, its a good idea. I barely notice the $5 going out each month - and I'm not a rich man - but just to avoid the ads, its well worth it. Even when I have to stop posting soon, when I move out, I'll probably keep paying, just because it'll be worth it when I do come back home.

Tim, do you get a breakdown of what the main bandwidth burners are?

Tim, I could be mistaken on this, but I thought I saw a quote on the windycityfootball forum saying you planned on moving this thread to the new forum software. Is it better at optimizing bandwidth usage?

The entire board is going to be moved, not just this thread. And I think it's mainly because the new version of the software has additional features.

Use more bandwidth or not, the new version of phpbb will provide the community with a better experience, so I'll upgrade this software when the released version of that product is available.

that does mean search will return to nsbb.

it's not a user graphic thing, right? I assume that since just about everyon'es sig/avatars (including the animated ones) are linked from offsite, you aren't getting tagged for that

OK, maybe this is a dumb question, and if it is, well then, I'm sure I'll get needled for it. I must be clueless or missing something, but . . .

Tim, you mentioned that you're having a tough time paying the server bill for NSBB. You would like more people to sign up for Premium to help pay the server costs for the site. That's 100% understandable.

But, why then are you opening two new websites, one for Chicago basketball and one for Chicago football, when you're already having a tough time paying for the cost of this one?

I doubt, at least for the time being, that the new sites will draw the same traffic as NSBB, but you're still taking on extra expense for their bandwidth use on top of what you're incurring here, right? The timing of this thread with the announcement of two new sites just seems a bit strange to me.

Because the new sites are also likely to not use a whole lot of bandwidth. I'm hoping that the new sites will be revenue positive to start. I'm probably going to have to upgrade the bandwidth on my server anyway, so the limited amount of extra capacity the new sites will require shouldn't be a huge deal in the near term.

Or maybe I'm just an optimist. :D
