Bruce[/url]"]Ward improving: The Cubs might be getting pinch hitter Daryle Ward off the disabled list more quickly than they thought. Ward went on the DL July 20 with a severely strained right calf.

“Mark O’Neal (the Cubs’ trainer) gave me some news today that probably Daryle Ward will be back a few weeks earlier than we thought, maybe the middle of the month,” Jim Hendry said, referring to August.

“I don’t think people understood the significance of how well he was swinging the bat and how well that was helping us from the left side.”

We could definitely use his bat off the bench.

That's very good news. Ward's .456 OBP this year would be very useful on the bench to this club right now. Depending on how our right fielders are playing by that point, I wouldn't mind him seeing another start or two in right, as his defense was actually better than expected for me (notice I didn't say good..just better than expected :D).

On the flip side:
Catch this: A sore left shoulder has slowed backup catcher Henry Blanco’s rehab from a cervical herniated disc. Jim Hendry said the doctors may temporarily halt Blanco’s minor-league rehab so he can rest. Blanco has been on the DL since May 31.
Getting Wood back this week, getting Ward back sooner than expected, but taking longer to get Blanco back. On the whole I'll take that deal (especially since, unbeknownst to the Cubs, they have a catcher named Soto tearing up AAA).

I get the feeling Blanco is repaying Hendry for overpaying him by taking his sweet time to return after September 1 callups are allowed.

Now if Soto can just get some naked pictures of Hendry in compromising positions we'd be all set.

Sadly, obtaining such evidence would likely leave him blind.
