Our core group of players aren't getting younger. They are in prime now. We don't have the luxury of waiting.

Just once it would be nice to go for broke.

Seconded.

The Cubs are 55-49, on a pace for just 85.7 wins. The offense is ranked 9th or worst in several key stats. Some of the pitchers who were outstanding early in the season have had a few hiccups of late. The team has a losing record to every good NL team besides Arizona and Milwaukee, suggesting they aren't exactly the best team in the league. The Cubs haven't won a pennant in 60 years or a WS in 98, and people are getting on fans for being pissed the team didn't do anything to get better this year.

How can anybody expect Cubs fans to be happy with the status quo?

What were they gonna do?

Trade Pie? People mad

Trade Marmol? People mad

Trade Murton? People mad, but not as many.

I would deal all three if it won us a championship.

nope no moves for Jimbo today, not a surprise. Heres to hovering around .500 the rest of the year, lets just hope the Brewers play below .500 and we can slide into the playoffs and anything can happen from there.

because we have been playing .500 baseball with our current roster for the last 2 months?

It was a hot streak. It got them back into contention, but to think they will sustain +.650 baseball the rest of the year is really pushing it. They havent even been over 8 games above .500 The team has to many weaknesses to sustain playing at that level for a 2-3 month timeframe.

your right. team sucks. season over.

good analyisis thanks for the input. I said nothing of the sort, but whatever, Im a Cubs fan and I expect failure from my team, as thats what they have done my entire life. Believe me I hope Im wrong, and IM man enough to admit it if Im wrong. We are all Cubs fans, but we all look at things differently, so why is my pessimism such a horrible thing? Its been 99 years and all 27 years of my life, and Ive never seen the Cubs in a World Series, so I think my pessimism is very warranted.

Alright enough already! You're depressing...

Ill post when I want to post but thanks

Obviously...

Sorry I didnt know differing opinions werent allowed on a message board.

Jesus. Hypersensitive much? Is this women's crocheting?

Yeah the biggest problem is that the lower levels are practically devoid of good prospects, so realistically, the Cubs were going to have to deal of a piece of the current team or of next year's team to get somebody.

BTW, for those saying that this is an extremely quiet trade deadline day, you must have short memories. In 2005 the biggest move made was the Cubs acquiring Lawton, which certainly didn't qualify as much of anything.

I know it's falling on deaf ears, but I wish people would just relax. You can't solve a problem without knowing all the variables, and no one will ever know whether or not there was a good deal out there to be made.

Now, if we wanna speculate, I think it's pretty obvious that the asking price was way too high for Dye, Griffey, and Dunn otherwise they would have gone SOMEWHERE (and then we would have some basis for criticizing Hendry). You also need to realize that all (or at least most) of these GMs will be talking and dealing with each other extensively in the future. If you get the reputation for asking high and then caving at the end, all anyone will do is just wait you out. Same thing if you lowball and then significantly up your ante at the last minute. Each deal (and non-deal) sets up the next one.

I know everyone is disappointed, and I share that sentiment. But the truth is that we don't really know if it's Hendry's fault or not; nor do we know that "he tried his best" either, so how about we just concentrate on tonight's game and overtaking the Brewers?

You obviously don't know your audience. Such rationality is unacceptable here.

Not only that but the team is being sold and it looks like that can't add salary...

But it's not really differing opinions, it's just straight negativity. The Cubs are a good team and a trade at this point obviously didn't make sense (or else it would have been made).

You have that much faith in Cubs management that you believe the fact that something wasn't done is justification for it not having been done?

There were several areas they could have improved in - I wasn't expecting all the fixes, but at least one should have been implemented. Is it possible a deal was made, and Hendry is waiting to report on it this evening with Len and Bob?

Where's A-Rod? Did we trade for A-Rod? Murton isn't in the lineup tonight? Hmm......I smell A-Rod.

Is it just me, or is this the absolute EPITOME of trolling?

I'm so pleased to see you're obsessed with me, even though I try to ignore you. You should really get out more. I guess if I "upgrade to premium" then I can put you on my super secret ignore list, that would be swell! I sure hope you post a reply with a wagging finger emoticon, that would be a real zinger.

Why aren't people doing jumping jacks? It's a seller's market. I'd rather not trade Marmol, Guzman and Gallagher for a Scott Linebrink-level reliever. Our future is intact and our team is solid. There's nothing to stop us from making a waiver deal. It just means that the asking price is even lower. Kudos to Hendry for realizing the smartest moves are the ones you don't make.

I'll reserve the knives if do something like trade 3 minor leaguers for Ryan Langerhans this offseason.

You and I both know that the Cubs have played better than 55-49 and have an easier upcoming schedule than the one they've already played. Yes, there are reasons for pessimism, but the Cubs really should have no problem winning their division and are in contention for having the best record in the league and home field throughout the playoffs.

Do I wish the Cubs had made a move for a bat? Yes. Am I going to have a doom and gloom, sky is falling attitude about the fact that they didn't? Nah.

Do I think it's reasonable to have such an attitude? Not really, but to each his own.

The problem, being, of course, that there is no player out there that would guarantee the Cubs a WS, and getting the players that would make them the top team in the NL would require more than those three players.

I seem to recall that deals had to be announced within 1 hour of the deadline, but I could be wrong.
