Murton Late Scratch; Payton Talks Itensify

UPDATE: While perhaps shopping Murton, the Cubs have had significant talks regarding Baltimore's Jay Payton. The Cubs would send over two mid-level prospects; does Murton fit that criteria? Payton will make $5MM next year to finish his contract.

UPDATE 2: RotoWorld says Murton was scratched tonight to allow Cliff Floyd to play and then get Sunday off.

Matt Murton was a late scratch for tonight's Cubs-Reds game. Does it mean anything? We should know soon enough. This time of year, every scratch or unexpected mid-game substitution is magnified.

The Cubs have been talking to the Rangers about lefty reliever Ron Mahay and catcher Gerald Laird, so maybe there's a connection. The Rangers could definitely find room for Murton in their outfield.

Take it with a grain of salt, but a Cubs source of mine confirms Felix Pie's availability (huh?) and says the Cubs made an inquiry on Torii Hunter. While intriguing, I wouldn't expect either player to be traded.

Jacque and Torii reunited again?

Torii Hunter has that thing in his contract with a no trade clause to 10 or 12 MLB teams, and the Cubs are one of them. I don't understand why Hendry would want Laird. I can sort of see him going for mahay, but laird has been downright bad this year, and we're getting zero production from the catcher spot this year anyway. Murton's future with the cubs will likely be over very soon, as much as it pains me to say it.

I'm pretty sure he can waive that no trade clause if he wants. I don't see why he wouldn't want to come to the Cubs for the rest of the year. They have a better chance of making the playoffs than the Twins. Unless he just hates Chicago for some reason.

mlbtraderumors is not reliable. Wait until you hear it from another site.

You're full of great advice.

Soto has hit 3 home runs in the past 4 games, I don't understand why we aren't giving this guy a better look.

Give Kendall some time to get his feet underneath him here.

Not like he's 0 for the century. OBP is .310 right now and batting .231.

Give him a little bit of time.

Stay away from Hunter unless you're only getting him for the rest of the season.

I wouldn't want him long term, but I'd definitely welcome someone with more HR than anyone on the team for the rest of the season.

Exactly what I'm saying.

That guy will go back down to his career norms which are about as good as Jacque Jones but just with a couple more homeruns.

To be honest, I think Murton is playing for his Cubs career tomorrow.

Hendry can't be that dumb, can he?

Yes he can. This is Hendry we're talking about.

I'm definitely not a Hendry fan, but he can't possibly trade a young player with a ton of potential just because he has one bad game. That would be completely asinine.

If only Jones could get to his career norm with power. I can't believe he only has 2 homeruns and .333 slugging. Not that he's ever been great, but his decent career numbers would be a huge upgrade.

Hunter is obviously a rental, no question about it.

In another thread I proposed Jones + Murton for Hunter. Twins get two outfielders for next year for cheap. We get a very productive CF for 2 months and 2 draft picks.

I just can't see Hunter waiving his no trade clause to come here because of the brick walls in the outfield.

He wouldnt want to be here long term, but I'm sure he'd like to play for a contender for the rest of the year.

That's my thought as well. He wouldn't be interested in us long term and would probably make that known, but I'd doubt he'd turn down the chance to play for a contender for just the last few months of his current contract.
