Mesa shutout the Rangers 8-0. Suarez with two scoreless/hitless with 3 BBs and 2 Ks. Andy Lopez (remember him?) hit a home run and is hopefully going to get back on track for a return to Peoria soon.

Smokies up 1-0 after 2 on a Matt Craig HR (10). Veal is 2IP, 0H 0R 2K 0BB.
Interesting, since Berg was scheduled to start. I wonder why there was a change. Veal should be rested, at least, since he went only one inning last time.

not bad for Veal. Did give up 5 runs, but none earned (he made an error and so did Matt Craig). He did hit one batter and give up 3 hits, but the K/BB (7/0) was excellent. A much better outing for him; hopefully he can harness his stuff.

Boise is trashing Spokane 14-4. Donaldson had the day off, but Dylan Johnston has gone 5-5 with a pair of doubles and (even more amazingly) no errors. He also stole a base.

Drew Rundle is 2-4 with a triple, walk and 4 runs scored.

Jonathan Wyatt is 3-6 with two doubles.

Tony Thomas is 2-6 with a double, and has struck out twice.

And, in a sure sign that he's with the wrong organization, Ty Wright is 0-1 with 5 walks.

Joseph Simokaitis lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as Tennessee topped visiting Carolina, 8-7, on Monday.

McGahee added a solo homer, his fourth, in the third and Matt Craig lined a solo blast, his 10th, in the second for the Smokies (14-17), who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Donald Veal, Grant Johnson and Rocky Roquet combined on a five-hitter. Veal surrendered five unearned runs on three hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk in four innings. Johnson allowed two unearned runs on a hit and a walk while fanning five over three frames and Roquet (3-0) gave up a hit and a walk and struck out two in two scoreless innings for the win.

Wheels Fall Off in Fateful Eighth Inning

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Palm Beach Cardinals slogged to a 6-2 win over the Daytona Cubs, Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Cubs and Cardinals each made four errors as a late push propelled Palm Beach to the win.

The game was tied at 2-2 going into the seventh inning, but the Cardinals tallied a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth (with the help of three Daytona errors) to take the lead. Each team had double-digit hit totals; Palm Beach pounded out 13 hits, as the Cubs ripped ten.

Isaias Garcia went 3-for-4 and came up a double short of the cycle for the Redbirds. Steve Clevenger, Brian Dopirak, Jeff Rea and Matt Camp each had multi-hit games for Daytona.

The Cubs struck in the first inning with some timely hitting. Jonathan Mota led off the inning with a walk, stole second and took third when the throw went into center field. It looked like Adam Ottavino was on his way out of trouble as he struck out the next two hitters, but Brian Dopirak bounced a single into right field to plate Mota for the game's first run.

The Cardinals knotted it up when Isaias Garcia led off the third inning with a shot over the wall in left field. The solo home run tied the game at 1-1.

Palm Beach took the lead in the fourth as mistakes came back to haunt Daytona starter Greg Reinhard. A.J. Van Slyke drew a two-out walk, went to second on a delayed steal and the catcher's throw went into center field, allowing Van Slyke to go to third. Luke Gorsett banged a single to left field to score Van Slyke and give the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage.

Miscues by the Cardinals opened the door for the Cubs in the fifth. Jonathan Mota reached when he hit a check-swing roller to third base that was mishandled. Mota was off with the pitch as Matt Camp bounced a single back up the middle, and when the ball was booted in center field, Mota raced all the way around to score, tying the game at 2-2.

Brandon Yarbrough put the Cardinals back in front with two out in the seventh inning. Yarbrough yanked a double down the right-field line to score Dan Nelson, who was off with the pitch.

The Cubs couldn't hold onto the baseball in a three-error eighth inning. Van Slyke led off the frame with a single, stole second and again went to third on an errant throw. Two batters later, Garcia ripped an RBI triple into the gap in left-center to plate Van Slyke and give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead. Donovan Solano followed with a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Garcia. Reliever Mike Phelps tried to throw Solano out at first, but the throw went awry. Solano came all the way around to score, and the throw to the plate went over the catcher for a two-error play. When the dust settled, the Cardinals had scored three runs to expand the lead to 6-2.

Ottavino picked up the win in relief for Palm Beach. The right-hander gave up two runs (one earned) in six innings of work to improve to 8-5. Taylor took the loss for the Cubs to drop to 4-10.

The Cubs (12-19) and Cardinals (14-16) continue their three-game series Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Jesse Estrada will toe the rubber for the Cubs; the Cardinals will counter with Brad Furnish.

PeoriaChiefs.com[/url]"] Chiefs Winning Streak Snapped at 7

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs had their seven game winning streak snapped with a 6-2 loss to the visiting Fort Wayne Wizards on Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 19-11 in the second half but keeps them in first place in the Western Division.

Fort Wayne used the long ball in the second inning for the second consecutive game to take an early lead. Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo hit Sam Carter with a pitch to start the inning. Two batters later Jeremy Hunt hit a two-run shot that stayed just inside the foul pole to make it 2-0.

The Chiefs got a run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to shaky defense by the Wizards. Henry Blanco got things started with a double to left field and he moved to third on a fly out from Clark Hardman. With Blanco at third, Russ Canzler hit a slow roller to third that was not fielded cleanly and allowed Blanco to score to make it 2-1.

The Wizards came right back in the third inning to add to their lead. Javis Diaz led the inning off with a bunt single and stole second base. Tom King dropped a single into left center field to put runners at the corners with only one out. Carter then cleared the bases with a triple that went just over the head of center fielder Leon Johnson to make it 4-1. Michael Campbell added an RBI single to score Carter to make it 5-1.

Peoria kept battling back in the bottom of the third inning. Leon Johnson singled to center and stole second base to get into scoring position. Ryne Malone doubled off the wall in left field to score Johnson and make it a 5-2 game.

The Chiefs attempted a rally against the Wizards bullpen in the eighth inning after Johnson picked up his second hit of the game. Jim Adduci lined a single into center with Johnson running to put runners at the corners with two outs. Wellington Castillo struck out against Rolando Valdez to end the inning and defuse the rally.

Fort Wayne extended their lead in the ninth off Chiefs reliever Jayson Ruhlman. Jon Schemmel singled to left field, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jodam Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to score Schemmel to make it 6-2.

Carrillo suffered the loss in six innings of work after giving up five runs in the first three innings. He struck out a career high eight and retired the last 11 batters he faced. Casey Lambert tossed two perfect innings while striking out two. Ruhlman gave up a run in the ninth on one hit and he also struck out one.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Ryne Malone (2B) – Malone finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the third inning. The double was the seventh this season for Malone to go along with his seventh RBI.
