This is an absolutely tragedy.

With this can I again stress...

Can we please now ban aluminum bats from competition? How many people must get injured for the sake of batmakers' profits?

I agree. Fortunately, the trend is starting to shift as New York State has banned the use of metal bats in High School play recently.

Baseball is meant to be played with wood bats.

They don't use aluminum in the minor leagues.

I'm down with getting rid of aluminum, but more in a "help scouting" than "prevent injuries" kind of way.

Oh I know -- t just brings up the many stories of players who have gotten injured over the years in baseball. I think a good way to help this specific situation would be to give coaches helmets.

Yeah, but won't this hurt high school baseball there? I doubt that the inner city schools can pay for all of the wood bats the team will go through during a season.

I was under the impression that the use of aluminum bats financially benefited the teams/schools/after-school programs that use them because of their durability, not the batsmakers.

How much do wood bats cost? I thought they were in the $30 dollar range... Would it really make that much of a difference?

of course it would. Did you forget that wood bats break?

The cheapest wood bats are about $20, but you definitely get what you pay for with wood bats.

You can get lucky and find good wood bats for $50 on occasion but your really good (maple) bats are about $80.

They do make composite wood bats that come with a one year warranty and those cost about $80, these are probably the most cost effective, but aren't pure wood and it depends upon the rules of the league if you can use them or not.

Well, it depends on how often they break and how much they're paying for the aluminum bats. You'd also have to know what kind of budget (on average) the schools, teams, and kids are working on to see how much of an effect it'd have.

You really didn't have to interrupt my honest question with a worthless post that needlessly condescends.

Not trying to insult your question, I would say it is a big deal. This could potentially kill inner city baseball. Most temas will not be able to afford to buy these bats on a consistant basis and the families of a lot of these players won't be able to help out either.
