He actually has done pretty well lately, and he's been getting his fastball up into the high 80's lately, which is a huge improvement.

Felix Pie and Matt Murton homer to extend hit streaks in the loss

By Toby Hyde / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Nashville Sounds came from behind with five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Iowa Cubs 5-3 Friday night at Principal Park in front of 12,990 fans.

The Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead on Matt Murton's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Felix Pie launched a two run home run onto the party deck in right field in the sixth to push Iowa's advantage to 3-0.

With two outs and a runner aboard in the top of the eighth, Nashville thirdbaseman Joe Dillon bounced a ball to Cubs' second baseman Eric Patterson. Patterson's throw pulled first baseman Josh Kroeger off the bag, but it appeared that Kroeger reached back to the base and beat Joe Dillon, but the runner was called safe prolonging the inning. Three batters later Algona, Iowa native Brad Nelson clubbed a three run home run to rightfield to give the Sounds a 5-3 advantage they would not relinquish.

Rehabbing Cubs right-hander Wade Miller started for Iowa and allowed just one run in three shutout innings. He struck out five.

The Cubs and Sounds play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 6:05 p.m.

SmokiesBaseball.com[/url]"]Stars win 11th straight

Steven Hammond tossed seven scoreless innings as Huntsville silenced visiting Tennessee, 4-1, for its 11th straight win on Friday.

Hammond (6-7) allowed five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three to win his third consecutive start. He has pitched 15 consecutive scoreless frames since a two-inning relief appearance on July 3.

The 25-year-old left-hander has gone nearly two months since giving up more than one run in a game. He is 3-1 with one save and a 1.16 ERA since June 10.

Vince Perkins worked 1 1/3 innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Dave Johnson got the last two outs for his second save.

The Stars (18-11) grabbed the lead when Lou Palmisano led off the bottom of the second with his 10th homer. Hernan Iribarren delivered a two-run triple in a three-run seventh that extended the lead to 4-0.

Tennessee (13-16) avoided the shutout in the ninth when Casey McGehee reached on third baseman Adam Heether's throwing error and Issmael Salas doubled him home.

Smokies starter Mark Holliman (7-8) gave up four runs on four hits and five walks with one strikeout in 6 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander has lost three straight decisions and seven of his last eight.

Daytona Leaves 13 on Base in 4-2 Loss

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Daytona Cubs missed opportunities all night, stranding 13 runners on base, on their way to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Brevard County Manatees. Mike Bell's two-out, two-run single in the top of the eleventh provided the winning margin for the Manatees.

Daytona scored single runs in each of the first and second innings, but was shut down from there. The Cubs left runners in scoring position in seven of the game's eleven innings, as they hit leadoff doubles three times but didn't score in any of those innings. Daytona loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but couldn't cash in.

The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the first with the help of several Brevard County mistakes. Kyle Reynolds ripped a two-out single to center field and went to second on a balk. Then, Brian Dopirak reached on a strikeout when the ball got away from the catcher. An error on a ground ball allowed Reynolds to come home to score and another error loaded the bases, but the Cubs couldn't capitalize for any more damage.

Daytona struck again in the second with three consecutive singles to start the inning. Jeff Rea's liner up the middle plated Yusuf Carter to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Mark Reed was thrown out trying to take third on Rea's single, but the Cubs still had a runner in scoring position with one out and couldn't cash in.

The Manatees cut the lead in half in the top of the third. Mike Bell tripled to the gap in left-center and scored when Yohannis Perez followed with a sacrifice fly to center.

Brevard tied the score in the fifth inning on a wild sequence. With one out, Anderson Delarosa was hit by a pitch. He stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk to knot the score at 2-2.

The Manatees pushed the go-ahead runs across in the top of the eleventh when Bell bounced a two-run single up the middle to score Lorenzo Cain and Angel Salome.

Mitch Atkins had another strong start for Daytona. The right-hander went six innings, gave up two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out seven. Mike McClendon matched Atkins, pitching six frames, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

Brevard County's bullpen came through in the clutch time and again during the game. Robert Hinton, Patrick Ryan, Kevin Roberts and E.J. Shanks combined to pitch five shutout innings.

Roberts went to 4-2 with the victory; Shanks picked up his tenth save of the season with a scoreless eleventh inning. Brevard County improved to 16-12 in the second half to strengthen its grip on the lead in the FSL Eastern Division.

Tim Layden, now 1-5 this year, took the loss for Daytona. The Cubs dropped to 11-17 in the second half.

It was Richie Zisk Bobblehead Night at "The Jack." The Daytona hitting coach's jersey number, 22, was retired during a pre-game ceremony. Zisk, a two-time American League All-Star with the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox, never played for the Cubs. He has spent 11 seasons in Daytona, two as the manager. He managed the 2000 Daytona Cubs to an FSL Championship and was the hitting coach for the 2004 Cubs, also a championship team.

South Bend, IN – The Peoria Chiefs finished their domination of the South Bend Silver Hawks with a 3-0 win on Friday night to complete a four game sweep in which they outscored SB 22-6. With the win the first place Chiefs are 17-10 on the half and 48-48 on the season as they record back to back shutouts for the first time in five years.

Although both teams had early chances, the contest went into the fifth inning scoreless for the second straight day. With one out in the fifth, Silver Hawks starter Eddie Romero hit Jim Adduci with a pitch. Matt Canepa followed with a hit to right center and Adduci scored all the way from first for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Canepa moved to second on the throw home but was left at second as the next two Chiefs were retired.

Peoria threatened against Romero in the sixth but came up empty. Ryne Malone, who entered the game in the bottom of the fifth, reached on a one out walk. Derek Schermerhorn singled Malone to third and advanced to second on the throw to third base. South Bend intentionally walked Wellington Castillo to load the bases but the Russ Canzler bounced into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

The Chiefs came right back in the seventh against Romero. Adduci led off with a single, his sixth of the series and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Canepa. Nate Samson doubled the Chiefs lead with a single up the middle before Romero got out of the frame trailing 2-0. Peoria loaded the bases in the eighth against reliever Craig Pfautz but Adduci bounced into a double play to end the inning.

The Chiefs capped the scoring in the ninth with a two out rally against Pfautz. Brian Leclerc reached on an infield single to second and Darwin Barney followed with an infield single to short. Malone out the Chiefs up 3-0 with a double down the first base line before reliever Ramon Sanchez got out of the inning.

Jake Renshaw went six shutout innings on the mound for the Chiefs allowing just three singles. He tied a season high with four walks and struck out two. Lefty Jayson Ruhlman allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three over two innings of work. Closer Alex Maestri allowed just a two-out walk in the ninth for his seventh save in as many chances.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Jim Adduci (RF) – Adduci scored each of the Chiefs first two runs. He was hit but a pitch and scored form first on a single in the fifth before he singled and scored on a basehit in the seventh. Adduci finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Another good outing for Atkins, 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 7/2 K/BB

Colvin is getting overwhelmed at AA. He's now got a .625 OPS with a 25/1 K/BB ratio in 102 ABs.

Marquez Smith seems to be hitting his stride at Boise. After a slow start he's hitting .301/.404/.507/.911 with 14 walks to 13 K's in July.

Similar stories for Ty Wright and Kyler Burke too. Burke is hitting .333/.447/.564/1.011 with 10/7 K/BB this month, and Wright is .342/.420/.487/.907 with 8/7 K/BB.

Not surprised Colvin is struggling in AA. The AA pitchers are taking advantage of the fact that he doesn't know how to take a walk. He's going to have to learn to be more patient or he's not going to go very far.
