uh oh, veal threw one inning (3 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) and then left the game. Not good.

CRAP. That can't be good at all. Must be an injury.

either an injury or trade. He had a bad first inning, but wasn't ineffective to the point where they'd lift him for another guy.

Is Hoffpauir a starter in IA? Didn't see him in the lineup either.

Nevermind just saw in another thread he is on the 7 day DL.

Scott Moore hits a 2-run homer for Iowa.... OPS up to .890, and at 1.157 for the month of July.

That's good enough to get him up to the #2 3B in the system for July (or overall for that matter).

What's the outlook for Scott Moore? Can he play anywhere other then third base?

I'm assuming he is better then just a backup to Ramirez based on his numbers?

His defense isn't that great at 3b. He could probably play the outfield. I believe he's played there before. He was a top prospect for the Tigers a couple years ago, but never has really figured it out.

Moore's got some questionable peripherals this year. He's raised his walk rate which is a good thing, but his K Rate has also gone up to 25%, and he's hitting fewer line drives(15%) with the same high BABIP(.331) that makes me think he'd be exposed Jason Dubois style at the big league level. However, he's 23 all this season, so letting him repeat Iowa(especially since there's no shortage of 3B capable players with Ramirez, DeRosa, Theriot, and Fontenot) would probably be good for him.

Dempster with a nice inning for Iowa tonight. 3 k's, no hits, 1BB.
I'm sure he'll be activated by the Cubs tomorrow if he feels good.

The game writeup from the Smokies' web site doesn't mention any injury. It just mentions him being chased after facing 8 batters in 1 inning.

Scott Moore hits sixth home run in six games

By Jeff Lantz / Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs used the longball to pound the Round Rock Express, 9-3, Thursday night at Principal Park.

Eric Patterson's three-run home run in the fourth inning gave the Cubs a 4-0 lead and Scott Moore's two run homer in the sixth extended the lead to 6-3. The homer was Moore's sixth in the last six games.

Iowa starter J.R. Mathes did not allow an earned run in six innings of work and picked up the win to improve to 7-6 on the year.

Ronny Cedeno recorded three hits on the night, while Felix Pie, Matt Murton, Geovany Soto and Moore each had a pair of hits.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Iowa in what is expected to be his last outing for Iowa before returning to Chicago.

Round Rock starter Chan Ho Park allowed the home runs to Patterson and Moore and was tagged with the loss as he allowed six earned runs in 5.2 innings.

South Bend, IN – The Peoria Chiefs got an outstanding pitching effort from Robert Hernandez and three relievers to shut out the South Bend Silver Hawks 1-0 Thursday afternoon. The win, their fourth straight, moves the first place Chiefs to six games over .500 for the first time in 2007 at 16-10.

The game entered the fifth inning scoreless as both Chiefs hurler Robert Hernandez and Hawks starter Derik Nippert pitched in and out of trouble. In the Chiefs’ fifth, Matt Canepa led off with a single and went to third on a hard-hit single from Ryne Malone. After a pop-up, Darwin Barney delivered his first Chiefs hit and first Chiefs RBI to bring Canepa home for a 1-0 lead. Nippert recovered to get Josh Lansford on a flyout and Blake Lalli on a groundout to end the inning.

South Bend threatened against reliever Casey Lambert in the eighth. Trailing 1-0, Richard Mercado led off the inning with a double off the leftfield wall. Mercado moved to third on a groundout and Lambert struck out Matt Oxendine for the second out. South Bend pinch hit Ricardo Sosa for Tyler Jones and the Chiefs brought on closer Alex Maestri out of the bullpen with the tying run at third. Maestri got Sosa to popup to Canepa in foul territory behind the plate to end the threat.

Hernandez limited the Silver Hawks to just two hits over six shutout innings to stop a personal three game losing streak. The eighteen year old gave up both hits in the third inning while walking three and striking out two. Jose Ceda worked a perfect seventh with a strikeout in his return to the Midwest League. Lambert allowed one hit while striking out one in 2/3 of an inning. Maestri

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game

Darwin Barney (SS) – Barney drove in the Chiefs lone run in the fifth inning with his first hit in a Chiefs uniform. He also turned in two sparkling defensive plays and helped turn a double play.

BoiseHawks.com[/url]"]Sox Drop Hawks in 13th, 5-4

EVERETT, WA -- The Everett Aqua Sox converted a pair of 13th inning walks and beat the Boise Hawks Thursday night, 5-4. Joe Dunigan's base hit brought home Kris Sanchez with the winning run after Jeff Dunbar tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Hawks trailed 3-0 until the 7th inning when Tony Thomas and Josh Donaldson had back to back doubles. Kyler Burke then hit his second home run of the season to tie the game. It would stay that way until the Hawks took the lead in the top of the 13th inning on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Mark Sawyer, scoring Josh Donaldson with the go-ahead run.

The series continues Friday night as Dustin Sasser goes to the mound for the Hawks. He will be opposed by the Aqua Sox Edward Parades. Game time at Everett Memorial Sadium in 7:05 pm. PST.

Three hits for Ronny. Hopefully that's a sign he's getting it going again. I'd like to see him called back up next week when Lee returns.

Have we heard why Veal was pulled after only one inning?

Sounds like he was just pulled early because he wasn't effective.
