Bruuuce[/url]"]Pitching plans: Lou Piniella wouldn’t rule out lefty Neal Cotts coming back up from Class AAA Iowa when the Cubs go from 11 to 12 pitchers Monday. Cotts opened the season in the bullpen before being demoted May 20.

Cotts is 0-1 with a 7.33 ERA in 6 starts for Iowa. In 23º innings, he’s given up 27 hits and 15 walks.

Piniella said he had hoped Rocky Cherry would be ready to make a comeback, but Cherry’s command hasn’t been what it was earlier.

Can't say I understand the move if/when it happens.

You mean Cherry has been worse than Cotts? Hard to believe after looking at those stats.

Who in the world are we gonna send down to accommodate this move? As great as it would be if Jacque was traded, I doubt it's going to happen today. So who is the odd man out? Pagan has been too good as a 4th outfielder to send down. I don't think they'll send down either Theriot or Fontenot. I don't have any idea who they would be willing to send down at this point.

In what situations could you use a pitcher like that?

Cotts will be the same thing that Gallagher just was-the long man out of the pen. He'll get in if they need someone to eat some innings if a starter goes out early. Cotts is the best option for this type of role-the team is not hurting his development by putting him there, and he is stretched out already to be able to handle the role. They are going to call up a 12th pitcher no matter what-that's the only sure thing right now.

DeRosa to the DL is a possibility with his migraine/dizzyness problems. With Pie's BA down into the low .200s, they may send him down (they shouldn't but they might). The other possibility is Theriot, but he has gotten a lot of starts at SS the past 2 weeks despite hitting terribly. Lou may view Theriot as a better bet to improve than Izturis over the rest of the year.

Honestly, I sort of suspect there will be a trade of some kind.

Dero is in the lineup today

It appears to me that Bruce Miles was making a little jab or putting a "read between the lines" statement himself when he put Cotts' stats in the article. Almost as if he wanted the reader to question the validity of Piniella's statement about Cherry's command and why he's not ready to come back up. I'm no scout, but the sheer #'s don't appear to be a reason why Cotts would get called back up. Not saying Cherry is the right choice either at this stage, but is there anyone else.

Was he completely useless when he started the season off with 10.2 scoreless innings?

Was he completly worthless in his outings besides those 10.2?

Not all of them.

But he did give up runs in 4 of his next 5 outings.

As I'm sure you already knew.

Yea besides those 10 innings Cotts didnt look too good. Add in those horrific numbers in AAA, and I see nothing that warrants a call up.

Cotts just got bumped from the Iowa rotation to long reliever, so he'll be more than ready for the role.

Cotts up, Pagan down?? Doesn't make sense.

What do we do with Scott Eyre here? He's taking up a roster spot, but not pitching (though it's debatable if he's actually 'pitching' when he does get into the game).

I checked his game log. He's not been in since the 20th (4 days). Before that, the 17th. In June he's got 5 appearances. And here's the kicker, the Cubs are 1-9 in the last ten games in which he's appeared.

How many of those games were already blowouts when he came in (hence, why he was allowed to pitch)?

Team Record in Appearances: 3-20.

The last 3 games he appeard, I believe the game was already nearly out of reach.

Oh, definitely part of the issue in that spot stat. But if he's been relegated to blowout duty, well that's a heck of a lot of money to pay for a guy who's only role is mop up.

This idea from the Tribune is feasible.

Options include moving Wade Miller to the 60-day disabled list and calling up someone like Pignatiello, who has a 2.49 ERA at Iowa, or Double-A left-hander Jeremy Blevins, who has a 0.98 ERA with 24 strikeouts at Tennessee.

Bush called Pignatiello "a candidate," and Piniella said Pignatiello was suggested as a call-up when Gallagher was summoned.
