At least use the "nicer" painting of the incident...notice Custer on the far right. His fate will be yours next week, Sucka.

wow, I'm disgusted by the vast differences in those 2 representations of the same incident

You mean how the second one has honorable Grandpa Lee signing the surrender while a horde of northerners leer at him (OMC's picture, of course), while the other shows the two groups of officers?

I especially like how the light source falls just over Lee's head, casing the Union officers in shadow.

I take it that that's sarcasm, but the one I posted is actually a much more accurate representation and is the official portrait of the incident which is a giant wall mural at the Appomattox National Park. For one, the more accurate one has the actual guys who were there other than Grant and Lee in the painting, such as Custer, Phil Sheridan, and one of Grant's staff members who was a Native-American.

There was just Lee and his secretary there for the Confederate side since the surrender took place in a Union held area, for obvious reasons. So ya, there was a horde of northerners leering at him.

Besides, you don't think the second one is just NICER to look at because it's better art?

Meh. No such thing as objectively better art. I like the style of both, though the first would be nicer if it wasn't written on.

The first is also inaccurate because Grant never wore a double breasted officers frock like that. He always chose to wear the coat of a grunt, something that endeared him to his men. Lee also rarely wore his nice officer's outfit, but did dress up to surrender his army.

When is the poll going to open on which picture of Lee's Surrender at Appomattox is better?
