And another solo HR for Tyler Colvin...that's 2 on two straight pitches!

Not as far as his first but that was also a bomb. #7!

Dang, they're just tagging Salas. Dopirak with a BOMB to make it 6-0.

Colvin with 2, Muyco with 1 and now Dopirak with 1.

And Alan Rick hits a HR on the next pitch. Yeesh...7-0 Daytona.

Palm Beach's Fernando Salas' night is over: 4.1 IP, 7 ER, 10 H, 1 K/1 BB, 5 HR. Wow.

Daytona ended up scoring 7 in the inning and now lead it 11-0. Colvin was 2/2 in the inning with the HR and a double too.

Aww, Colvin lifted since it's a blow out...he was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

By naked eye, the Daytona announcers estimate that Colvin's HR travelled 430 feet.

On the post-game show, they were saying it was between 430 feet and 450 feet. Dope's was about that long too.

Get Soto up to Chicago and send Hill down!

I think Soto has a shoulder issue and hasn't been catching.

He caught on Friday and yesterday (had Saturday off but PH).

Well if he is healthy, he sure looks like a more attractive option than Hill.

No doubt.

We need to find out if Bruce has heard if Soto is going to be an option or if they plan to stick with Hill.

IowaCubs.com"]Hoffpauir Slams Birds in 14-11 Win

Buck Coats goes 5-5 with two home runs

By Andrea Breen / http://www.iowacubs.com

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Memphis Redbirds leading 11-8, Micah Hoffpauir stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam straight away to centerfield to give the Cubs a 12-11 lead. Two batters later, Iowa's Buck Coats added a two-run homer, to push Iowa's advantage and the eventual final score to 14-11. With the win, the Cubs snapped their four game losing streak.

Coats went 5-for-5 with five RBI and two home runs in the game.

Geovany Soto and Coats hit back-to-back home runs in the Cubs five run first inning and Matt Murton, who was 2-4, drilled a two run shot in the Cubs three run second inning. Monday was the Cubs' second five home run game this season.

Iowa left-hander Clay Rapada earned the win for the Cubs in his first game back from Chicago. After finishing off the eighth, Rapada worked a one, two, three ninth inning for his third AAA win of 2007.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies drop one to Stars 3-2

Sevierville, TN – In what could have been a tie-breaking game to decide the first half North Division championship, the Tennessee Smokies fell victim to another great pitching performance by the visiting team. Tonight is was the Huntsville Stars winning a pitcher’s duel by the score of 3-2 in front of 3,227 fans, and 164 dogs out on the outfield grass.

Huntsville struck early against Smokies starting pitcher Justin Berg (3-5). Berg walked leadoff hitter Hunter Iribarren, and then yielded a single to Michael Brantley to put runners at 1st and 3rd. The Smokies turned a double play to help get Berg out of the jam, but Iribarren scored on the play to give the Stars a 1-0 advantage.

The lead would not last long as the Smokies offense also got started early in the game against Huntsville’s starting pitcher Sam Narron (3-5). Josh Kroeger reached base on a fielder’s choice with two out, which brought Jake Fox to the plate. Fox proceeded to deposit a home run over the left centerfield wall, and the Smokies had the lead 2-1.

The Stars struck back in the top of the 3rd inning however to regain the lead. With two men on, Brantley again came through with a big hit, this time a two-run double to give Huntsville a 3-2 lead.

That would be all the scoring in the game tonight as both team’s pitching staffs took over from there, along with some scintillating defensive plays by both teams. Narron went eight innings of four hit ball for the Stars, giving up two runs and striking out four. Berg pitched through several jams over six innings, yielding three runs and striking out seven Stars batters. David Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his first save of the year.

Colvin Has Two Home Run Game

Jeanine Jiannetti

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Jeff Samardzija (0-5) left the game just one out shy of earning his first win of the season in the Daytona Cubs 11-2 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals Monday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Cubs had five homeruns to pummel the Cards in the win.

The Cubs out hit the Cardinals 15-10, forgetting that the home run derby was Friday night, five of Daytona’s hits were solo home runs, three of them in the fifth inning when the Cubs put seven runs on the board.

Tyler Colvin (3-for-4) showed Daytona fans why he was selected to the All-Star team, Colvin reached base every at bat with two home runs and a ground rule double to be named one-of-the-two players of the game.

Jake Muyco received the co-player of the game award along side Colvin by going 3-for-4 on the night as well and smashing his first homerun of the season into the scoreboard. Muyco was also strong defensively, he throw out leadoff batter James Rapoport in a stolen base attempt in the top of the first inning to set the tone early.

Brian Dopirak (2-for-4) and Alan Rick (2-for-4) both added to the slugfest in the fifth inning with a home run each. Alan’s shot was his third of the season, while Dopirak has homered in 4 of his last 8 games. Nate Spears (2-for-3) had a triple in the fifth and scored a run to contribute to the Cubs seven runs.

Jeff Samardzija, who finally received the run support from the Cubs needed for his first win of the season, was just one out away when Scott Koerber came in relief in the top of the fourth inning. Koerber’s first pitch to Allen Craig caused a ground ball to third baseman Matt Matulia who forced the out at first to end the inning.

Samardzija did not allow a run on five hits and five walks while striking out just one in four and two-thirds innings in his first start back in the rotation after a brief four-game stint in the bullpen.

Koerber (3-5) earned the win in two and a third innings while not allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strike out.

Jon Mueller allowed for the Cardinals’ only two runs of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a A.J. Van Slyke two-run home run.

Jim Hendry was at the Daytona game - he'll see 3 more Daytona games this week:

Daytona News-Journal"]"I'd like to hit two homers any day, but I guess today was better with (Hendry) here," Colvin said.

It was the first game back following the Florida State League All-Star Weekend for both teams and Colvin -- one of five all-star Cubs -- got off to a great start. He went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

"He's been our most consistent batter the whole first half and he had a very good game tonight," Cubs manager Jody Davis said.

The only drawback in the Cubs' victory was pitcher Jeff Samardzija, making his first start following a couple of weeks in the bullpen, wasn't able to complete five innings to get his first win this season. He came within one out, going 4 2/3 shutout innings, but was limited to 76 pitches. He issued five walks, which ran up his pitch count.

"I thought he threw the ball a lot better," Davis said. "He was throwing good. He was up in the strike zone a little, but he got the ball down enough to get the ground balls he needed for two big double plays."

Samardzija said he was just happy to be back in the rotation.

"I just wanted to get back out there, get in a little work and get back in the rotation," the right-hander said. "I took a little hiatus there (being in the bullpen). It's good to be back in the rotation. It's where I want to be. We'll see what happens."
