With the Rangers currently 17.5 games out of first place, their season is over. Will teams be calling asking about Sammy? If I were a betting man, I'd say yes. I'd honestly be pretty surprised if he finishes the season in Texas. The questions are, which teams will be calling? What will the Rangers be asking for? And, ultimately, where will Sammy be traded?

I think he gets traded as well. And as much as I love his HR and RBI production this year, the very weak sabrematrician in me can't ignore his anemic OPS. If he is traded, he shouldn't be traded for much more than what we traded him for

Anemic? His OPS places is 7th best among AL rightfielders. It's nothing special, obviously, but to say it's anemic is just flat out wrong. He'll be traded for more than what we dumped him for.

Hrmmmm.....

Maybe we could...

Nah, not even opening up that can of worms again.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't know that stat, but still, a .762OPS for a Sammy Sosa who everyone thinks is "back" isn't that impressive. Will he win comeback player of the year? Probably, but he's not doing anything incredible at the moment. But at the same time, I'd definitely entertain the idea of trading for him at the dead line if we need a RF still and can't get better available options, I can't imagine he'd be too difficult to obtain in terms of pieces we'd have to part with so he could be a bargain.

EDIT: The whole notion of being a Cub fan and discussing a trade for Sammy Sosa and thinking we could get a good deal on him just feels weird

Once Sammy gets his 600th, the Rangers will hang onto him for a little while in order to gain some profits from the marketing of it. After that wears off, they will deal him. I have no doubt in this.

The Angels might have some interest in him. I'm not sure who else would. I would love a return to the Cubs, but I know that won't happen.

I can certainly see him going to another AL team who is in need of a DH/part time OF.

Yanks (eww)?

Tigers?

Twins?

I have nothing behind those names I threw out. I'm just talking (unintelligently) out loud.

Before anyone says it, Sammy would never come back to Chicago while the man who traded him is still GM. Not....gonna....happen.

He probably will be traded though. The Angels perhaps, as their outfield is very bad outside of Guerrero (lol at the Angels for signing GMJr. at that price). Basically it will be the same teams the Cubs are trying to trade Jones to.

the combined suckitude of Abreu, Drew/Pena, Die, and Nixon/Michaels does not make Sosa's suckitude any better.

Shane Victorino's current OPS+ = 107

Juan Encarnacion's current OPS+ = 101

Sammy Sosa's current OPS+ = 96

Michael Barrett's current OPS+ = 90

plus, for the most part Sosa's been DH'ing, and hasn't hit a lick when playing as an outfielder. sure, it's not anemic in the sense of comparing him to Jones, but in terms of what rightfielders/DH's are expected to do, I don't care what the rest of the league is doing, it's anemic.

if you think he will be traded for more than a platoon infielder and two of an organizations top 20 prospects, then the Cubs should get a bonanza for trading Michael Barrett.

Sammy is on a one year deal, right? I could see the Cubs possibly grabbing him after the team is sold, if Hendry is fired. The new ownership might see that as a great PR move.

Well my comment was that Sammy would never come back while Hendry was still the GM. I agree I could see this happening this offseason if the Cubs don't trade for another RF. If he stays cheap and the Cubs trade Jones, both of which are quite likely, then a Floyd/Sosa platoon wouldn't be a terrible option (I'm also assuming the Cubs don't plan to make Murton into a RF).

That's not true though about him not returning with Hendry still as GM. Supposedly when he decided to come back, the Cubs were the first team he called.

Now, whether the mixed snubs of being ran out of town and refused a return has created such an atmosphere is another discussion. But we certainly could have had him in spring training instead of the Rangers. Which sort of annoys me in regards to Hendry, Sammy Sosa on a flier for under a million is sure a better bet than Wade Miller on 2.5.
