But this is reason #2,404 why I love this guy and wish nothing but the best for him in the future:

Kerry Wood became the latest Cub to join in Derrek Lee's Project 3000 campaign to raise awareness for LCA, the genetic eye disease affecting Lee's 4-year-old daughter Jada.

Wood and his wife Sarah announced Tuesday that proceeds from his annual charity bowling tournament, which takes place July 22 at the 10pin Lounge, will go toward the fight against LCA.

"We have a Cub family member in need," Wood said at a Wrigley Field news conference. "And we thought this was the right thing to do."

Wood joins catcher Michael Barrett and closer Ryan Dempster, who already have donated a combined $181,000 toward the campaign—a $50,000 initial donation and additional donations based on their home runs and saves, respectively.

Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis also has donated more than $15,000 to Project 3000, including a $10,000 initial donation and additional donations based on strikeouts.

Lee said he knew of Wood's involvement since last winter, but kept it quiet at Wood's request.

"When [Kerry and Sarah] called us, we literally had tears in our eyes," Lee said.

Kudos to Dontrelle (obviously Barrett and Dempster too).

Dempster is just a wonderful human being - he does lots of great stuff. Makes me proud to be a Cubs fan.

Just when you can't love the guy anymore. Get back soon Kerry...

I hope we see him by the end of July/early August...

of 2008?

Hilarious! Because we've never heard that sort of joke before. It's right up there in originality with 'Hendry likes donuts' jokes.

btw, happy birthday to KW - he turned 30 on Saturday.

If he never pitches again he can go up in the booth. I don't care how good he is, he loves the Cubs and thats all that matters.

I bet he wouldn't be all that bad. He seems like a pretty articulate guy.

I'll take him over Brenly.

I like Brenly. He reminds me of my Dad, in that "I'm old but I'm gonna try and act young and hip in front of the kids" kind of way. Plus he will always be quoted by me for saying "Danks and Durbin in Detroit... DUH!"

Back on topic though, it's nice to see that from players, especially Wood. At least he's doing something productive this year.

What's the latest on his playing time status?

Wood in the booth would be nice, but not for a few years. I'd like to see him back on the mound in a Cubs uniform for a few years first.

Wood in the booth??! Did Kelly Pickler come up there again?

Vance needs to get back to school - this summer break stuff is really giving him too much time on his hands

I don't think that's time.
