The Yankees announced the following signings today (not just Brackman):

1st round (30th): RHP Andrew Brackman, NC State - $3.3 million

2nd round: C Austin Romine, El Toro HS (Lake Forest, CA) - $500,000

4th round: 3B Brad Suttle, Texas - $1.3 million

6th round: C Chase Weems, Columbus HS (GA) - $450,000

8th round: OF Taylor Grote, The Woodlands HS (TX) - $250,000

10th round: SS Carmen Angelini, Barbe HS (Lake Charles, LA) - $1 million

So yeah, great job Selig. Way to scare teams like KC into not going over slot while the Yankees and Tigers do whatever the hell they want.

NO ALL-STAR GAME FOR YOU!!!!

I don't really see where Selig's at fault. There are no rules about who can spend how much on the draft. If the Royals are too cheap to pay Moutsakas, then that's their own fault. Callis has done a study showing that on average, players who are signed above slot money end up saving much more than the amount invested. They're more likely to end up with a good young player whose level of production would otherwise be very expensive on the free agent market. The Yankees and Tigers just happen to be smart enough to use the system to their advantage.

I'm not sure KC being cheap has much to do with this - this isn't, say, Pittsburgh here. KC could have been cheap and taken Moskos or Detwiler. They didn't. They have stepped up with bonus demands the past few seasons (Gordon and Hochevar didn't come cheap). They spent quite a bit on Gil Meche. The problem here is that the small market teams are much more affected by Bud's threats than the big market teams. And, on top of it, I believe I read that KC's owner has toed the line when the commissioner's office has talked before, so they are much more likely to stick to the rules than others.

I have no problem - none - with what Boston, Detroit and the NY Yankees do (and what the Angels and Cubs do from time to time). They're doing the right thing, they're making sound investments and taking advantage of an imperfect system. But Bud has implemented a system that doesn't and cannot have much bite (MLBPA wouldn't approve a strict slotting system) - he has enough power to enforce a lot of the teams but can't do squat to others and those teams are able to run free. No equality here. Plus I think setting this year's slot at 10% less than last year's slot is ridiculous and asking too much of teams that are willing to comply.

3B Matt Dominguez signed with the Marlins over slot. The remaining 4 guys are all top 10 picks:

2. Kansas City: 3B Mike Moustakas, Chatsworth HS (Los Angeles, CA)

3. Cubs: 3B Josh Vitters, Cypress HS (Anaheim, CA)

5. Baltimore: C Matt Wieters, Georgia Tech

9. Arizona: RHP Jarrod Parker, Norwell HS (Ossian, IN)

Less than 2 hours left. At this point, I'm surprised it's gone this long. I figured they'd have it wrapped up in the afternoon.

Supposedly CSN was saying Hendry will probably make an appearance in the booth today.

I'm sure Mr. Miles and the rest of the beat reporters for the Cubs are thrilled about that.

Moustakas & Wieters Gossip

Posted Aug. 15, 2007 9:15 pm by Jim Callis

To this point on Draft Deadline Week, we’ve refrained from speculation and only reported confirmed signings (or definitive non-signings, as the case may be). But with a little less than two hours before the deadline, we’re going to reveal the latest gossip we’re hearing on negotiations. Remember, this is gossip, not hard facts, and it comes from industry sources but not the clubs or agents involved.

The Royals reportedly have upped their offer to No. 2 overall pick Mike Moustakas from MLB’s slot recommendation of $3.15 million to $4 million. Moustakas, advised by Scott Boras, appears to be seeking $7 million.

The Orioles reportedly have offered No. 5 choice Matt Wieters a major league contract worth slightly less than the guaranteed $8.5 million deal that No. 1 pick David Price got from the Devil Rays today. Wieters, also advised by Scott Boras, apparently is looking for more than $10 million.

Sounds like the usual Boras last minute thing - I could easily see one of these two actually signing.

rotoworld saying Moustakas signed for undisclosed sum

Yes, Wieters is the only first rounder who hasn't signed. Callis had the story 10 mins ago.
