I just knew this would happen. This is complete asinine. It's OK for Froeming to push Lou but nothing happens to him. The initial umpire doesn't diffuse the situation but escalates it but Lou gets suspended. Listen MLB the umpires are not above the game.

Lou did nothing to warrant any kind of suspension. The paper today said the crew chief said that Lou initiated some contact, but that certainly didn't appear to be the case.

Froeming was holding on to Lou's jersey. I think this suspension is ridiculous

I don't have a problem with what Lou did, and I wish he'd do it more, but... he kicked dirt on the ump. I don't have a problem with him being suspended for a game or two.

Agreed. I have no problem with what he did, or with him being given a day or two off.

How is kicking dirt different from throwing dirt? If someone throws dirt onto an umpire, there is no question he would be suspended.

ESPN just said hes suspended indefinitely...

I heard that too. Took it more as, they wanted to make sure he was suspended for today, while figuring out the actual length.

I agree, the league has to take a stand. Not suspending Lou would be in a way condoning his actions.

MLB said he made contact with Wegner...I didn't see that at all. He did swat away some of the other umps hands that were trying to hold him back, but I never saw him touch Wegner.

AP

...The length of Piniella's suspension will be determined Monday after a meeting with John McHale Jr., the MLB executive vice president for administration.

I also heard on the radio that Lou will have the opportunity to plead his case before the final determination is made.

I don't really care, I can see both sides, but what I am really getting tired of is umps who seem to inflame a situation or egg on something negative to happen. I've heard that discussed and I do believe there is some truth to it. Yesterday, Lou is going hog wild yelling at the ump, but the ump was just as bad responding up in his face. I would think that's no better. It's not all umps, but some seem to have a pretty big chip on their shoulder lately.

The thing that ticked me off with Lou yesterday was that (post game) he said he was going out there no matter what. That's ridiculous. This team is like a 747 headed straight on for a mountain. I don't think he needs to be piping off with comments like that, especially after the B vs. Z meltdown.

agreed....i was watching a ballgame the other nite, can't recall what game, and the player took a called third strike that was borderline at best....the player turned around and kinda gave the umpire a look..nothing more, nothing less....didn't say a word...and what does the umpire do? he yells directly at the player, "what was wrong with that pitch?"...not necessarily needed in that instance...if this happened to me while playing i definitely would have something to say back to the umpire.

Honestly, I think Lou wanted to give everybody something to talk about besides Barrett vs Z.

Great point, and probably very true. Very smart move by Lou.

I think I saw that game you're talking about, or at least an identical situation. You can't do anything to a guy because he gave you a dirty look. There are a lot of bad calls, it's part of the game, but it's also part of the game if the guy wants to shoot you a look over it.

I don't doubt Lou thought that, but I don't think it was a smart move. I know they're playing terrible ball right now. But I look forward to the season to see baseball, and not some silly dog and pony show by the manager who has an ulterior motive for making the scene. Not to mention Cubs fans are pretty volatile right now, so giving them something to launch mugs onto the field over, or go running onto the field is just not smart. Even if this season is over, I'd still prefer the focus to be on baseball, for now or for next year or whatever.

Just because he's not in the dugout, doesnt mean he's not making the decisions. He could easily be hiding in the tunnel listening/watching the game and yelling out stuff.

I was thinking that too. Ozzie Guillen tries to do this a lot. Lou going on a rant might accomplish two things. One, it'd deflect attention away from Barret, Z, and the teams horrible play. And two, it might light a fire under his team if he does it correctly.

Now if only he would've used the rosin bag like a grenade, then I'd be impressed.

Managers getting thrown out is every bit the part of baseball. Leyland and Torre both got thrown out this weekend too.

I think Lou did a good thing there. He shifted the focus off of two players that need to regroup and start playing well again. I don't see how in anyway that is a "dog and pony show".
