THey decided to not use Hernandez as a piggy back. He will start Monday, Maestri Tuesday and Cuevas to the pen until Mateo moves on. Alburquerque will go today after Mateo...

Peoria lost 14-4. Mateo went 3 innings giving up 6 hits, 4 runs, 1 K/0 BB's, and 1 HR. If you think that was bad, wait till you hear Alburquerque's line: 5 and 2/3's, 8 hits, 10 runs, 5 K's/3 BB's, 2 HR's allowed. As for the Chiefs offense, Malone went 2/3. Kyle Lansford was 1/2 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Canzler, Adduci, and Yusuf added the other RBI's for the Chiefs.

Iowa down 6-2 in the 5th. Kinkade has a solo HR. Soto has a double and EPatt is 1/3. Both Cedeno and Fontenot are 0/3 so far.

Tennessee down 1-0 in the 3rd. Fox and Cortes both have base hits. Hart has allowed a run on 5 hits through 3.

Daytona down 2-0 after 1. Scott Taylor gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 BB's in the 1st inning.

Ugh. Horrible, horrible outing for me.

1.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

:(

Downs came in and did even worse over 1.2 IP. And Phelps even worse that that in 1 inning.

Daytona is getting destroyed, down 18-3 after 5.

I hate the fact that the Cubs are playing Epatt in LF at times. God this organization is stupid.

All boxes posted.

Daytona, despite giving up 20 runs, narrowly avoided losing by the biggest deficit of the night in the FSL. Vero Beach lost to the Sarasota Reds 16-0.

Something about the minor league teams and the umpiring this season...

DAYTONA BEACH -- Daytona Cubs manager Jody Davis found it difficult to observe the calls starting pitcher Scott Taylor was receiving. It became so tough to watch, he soon decided he wasn't going to watch anymore.

"If you watch a lot of baseball, the good umpires you never notice they're there," Davis said. "It's almost at the point now where it's almost personal. Like (head umpire Masake Nonaka) is trying to do it."

Two days ago, Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija struggled to get called strikes in a 13-4 loss to Brevard County, Davis recalled.

With his frustration building with Nonaka since Samardizja's start, Davis said he made up his mind when he went out to the mound. Davis planned to speak his mind to Nonaka and let the umpire take it from there.

Midway through the second inning Davis walked to the mound to talk to Taylor. But Davis said his intention was to get Nonaka out to the mound.

Nonaka came to the mound to tell Davis to hurry it up. Davis brushed Taylor aside and started screaming at Nonaka until the subsequent ejection.

"It's too competitive in baseball to have to get more than three outs in an inning," Davis said.

Ugh, Mateo's shoulder tightened up during his start at Peoria. Let's see if he makes his next scheduled start. :?

Mateo struggled in his three innings of work.

"I don't know what it was," Mateo said. "My shoulder still felt tight."

Mateo allowed three runs in the second and one in the third. Mateo escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first with a double play on a ground ball back to the mound.

"When you get rehab guys (coming down from) any level, the young kids like this get excited," Beloit manager Jeff Smith said. "They get excited to face the guy, they want to get ready to hit."

Mateo threw 53 pitches, mostly fastballs, and for the most part was around the plate. He hit one batter but walked none. The problem was the hits. Mateo allowed seven, including a three-run home run to Danny Santiesteban in the second.

"I wanted to throw hard," Mateo said. "I need more confidence."

Mateo, whom Baseball America rates as the No. 11 prospect in the Cubs system, topped out at 91 mph and averaged around 88. Last year, his fastball ranged between 90 and 95 mph.

He was 7-4 with a 2.82 earned-run average in Double-A and was promoted to the Cubs last August. He won his first start and finished 1-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 11 games.

The hope is Mateo's velocity will return. When it returns is the question, especially after he reported tightness in his shoulder.

"In the second inning, he started telling me that it was feeling a little tight," Chiefs pitching coach David Rosario said. "We'll have to talk to the (Cubs) and see what we do next."

He won't start until at least Monday the 11th. Rosario gave me our rotation today for the Clinton series as being: Thurs - Pina, Fri - Renshaw, Sat- Hernandez, Sun - Carrillo.

Carrillo replaces Maestri in the rotation starting Tuesday. Maestri is much more effective as setup/closer.

The numbers certainly bare that out, glad to see Alex back in the pen where he was dominating earlier.

Sounds like I might've done better if there was a competent umpire behind the plate.
