no wonder Raisin has so many posts....he uses 3 posts to introduce these threads when he could just do one

Normally just do one post but Outshined ditched us so I have to pick up his duties too.

Oh sure, pick on the guy defending alleged war criminals why don't you?

Alleged being the key word, right?

Arizona Phil talks about Juan Mateo's start yesterday at extended spring training:

The EXST Cubs (Boise/Mesa) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the 8th to defeat the EXST Angels 6-4 at Mesa’s Fitch Park Field #3 this morning, in a game that featured the second rehab start for RHP Juan Mateo.

Mateo, who has been on the Cubs 15-day DL with a sore shoulder since ST, increased his innings to three and his pitch count to 40+, as he threw 41 pitches (29 strikes, 4/2 GB/FB), with his fastball topping out at 92 MPH. He allowed three hits (one HR) and one run, but no walks, with three strikeouts, in his three innings of work.

As long as he does not having any significant negative physical symptoms in the aftermath of today’s game, Mateo looks fit and ready to leave Mesa and continue his rehab (gradually increasing his pitch count) at Daytona or Tennessee, with a return to the Iowa starting rotation probably by no later than mid-June, possibly even earlier.

Sounds like Mateo is ready to leave Mesa.

Point for you. From Nate:

Cubs Pitcher Juan Mateo to Make Rehab Start Sunday with Chiefs

Mateo made 10 MLB starts in 2006

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that RHP Juan Mateo will make a rehab start in Peoria on Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Beloit Snappers at 2:00 PM. The Chiefs have one open spot on the 25-man roster which will be filled by Mateo on Sunday.

The Cubs have not yet announced hoe long Mateo will pitch or what his pitch count will be. As of now he is on the Chiefs roster as a regular pitcher and could make multiple starts in a Chiefs uniform. Robert Hernandez, who has made three starts and is Sunday’s scheduled starter, will now follow Mateo out of the Chiefs bullpen. Tickets for Sunday’s game against first place Beloit are available at http://www.peoriachiefs.com, by calling 1-866-MYTICKET or at the O’Brien Field Box Office.

The 24-year old Mateo has not pitched in 2007 at any level after making 11 appearances last year with the Cubs, 10 of which were starts. He made his first major league start on August 3rd against Arizona where he became the first Cubs starter since John Kornoka to win his first Major League start. He threw five innings against the Diamondbacks while allowing two earned runs and striking out two in a 7-3 victory.

O'Malley outdueled right-hander Clay Hensley (0-1), who was making his third rehabilitation start for the Beavers. Hensley was tagged for six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out one.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Atkins Shuts Down Manatees, Cubs Win 8-1

Culpepper Knocks in Three Runs in Daytona Debut

By: Dan Watson

[VIERA, FL] - Mitch Atkins cruised, the Daytona offense capitalized on Brevard County mistakes and the Cubs drilled the Manatees, 8-1, Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium. Atkins delivered six shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 17 innings.

Atkins (4-3) won his second straight start. The right-hander went six innings, gave up five hits, a walk and struck out two. Meanwhile, the Cubs pounded out 11 hits and jumped on five Brevard County errors. Jeff Culpepper was one of the offensive stars in his first game this year as a Cub; Culpepper came through with a 3-for-5 performance, knocking in three runs.

For the second straight game, Daytona jumped on the Mantatees early by pouncing on mistakes. In the second inning, Jesus Valdez started the frame with a leadoff walk. The next batter, Brian Dopirak, sent a grounder toward third base, but the ball got past the third baseman and down the left field line. Valdez went all the way to third base on the play and Dopirak went to second. Jeff Culpepper followed with an RBI groundout, plating Valdez to give Daytona a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Nate Spears stepped up with a two-out bloop RBI single to right, staking the Cubs to a 2-0 advantage.

Daytona added a run with two out in the top of the third. Jesus Valdez rode a Rafael Lluberes pitch over the wall in right field for an opposite-field solo home run, his first of the season. The Cubs threatened again later in the inning, putting runners at the corners, but Lluberes got out of the jam to limit the Cubs' lead to 3-0. That was all for Lluberes, however, as he was lifted from the game after just three innings pitched.

The Cubs capitalized on more Manatee miscues in the seventh. Tyler Colvin smoked a double down the right field line off reliever Jeremy Lewis to start the inning. Two batters later, Dopirak swung and missed for a third strike, but reached when the pitch got away from the catcher. Alberto Garcia pinch ran for Dopirak and promptly stole second. With two runners in scoring position, Culpepper responded with a two-run single to put Daytona up, 5-0. Next, Robinson Chirinos singled to left field and Culpepper steamed into third on the play, putting runners at the corners. Nate Spears followed by bouncing a ball toward the left side which was cut off on a diving stop by shortstop Alcides Escobar. His throw to first was errant, and the play was scored an RBI infield single to give the Cubs a six-run advantage. With runners at the corners and one out, Jake Muyco lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Chirinos dashed home to cap a four-run inning and the Cubs led, 7-0.

Brevard County got on the board in the home half of the seventh off reliever Rocky Roquet. Mat Gamel stroked a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Chris Errecart to cut the Cubs' advantage to 7-1.

Dopirak had an interesting night at the plate for Daytona; the first baseman went 0-for-4, but reached on errors three times and reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout.

Lluberes (4-3) took the loss for Brevard County. The Manatees dropped to 31-21 with the loss. Daytona upped its record to 25-26 with its third straight win.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Blown Out Again by Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored seven times in the first two innings and cruised to another big win over the Peoria Chiefs 12-7 Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Chiefs have now been outscored 21-10 in the first two games of the four game series and fall back to 25-27 on the season.

Cedar Rapids continued their clutch hitting from Tuesday night in the first inning on Wednesday against Chiefs starter Alex Maestri. With one out, Abel Nieves and Chris Pettit collected back to back singles. Cedar Rapids got on the board when Mark Trumbo singled to left and Alfred Joseph bobbled the ball allowing Nieves to score. After a flyout, Matt Sweeney made it 2-0 with a RBI single to right as Pettit came home.

The Kernels blew the game wide open in the second with some help from the Chiefs. With one out, Stantrel Smith hit a liner to left that was misplayed into a triple by Alfred Joseph. Ryan Mount doubled Smith home for a 3-0 lead and then Maestri issued back to back walks loading the bases. After a second out, catcher Hank Conger connected on a grand slam into the left field pavilion for a 7-0 Kernels lead. The slam was the first hit by the Kernels and the first allowed by the Chiefs in 2007.

Trailing by seven, the Chiefs finally got on the board in the fourth against Kernels starter Sean O’Sullivan. With one out, Josh Lansford singled for the second time in as many at bats. Lansford moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by O’Sullivan and then scored on a hard hit groundout off the bat of Russ Canzler.

Matt Sweeney led off the Kernels fifth with his second double of the game and came home on Smith’s second triple of the night. Smith later scored on a wild pitch from Chiefs reliever Chuckie Platt to put the Kernels up 9-1. In the sixth, Pettit drew a walk from reliever Oscar Bernard and scored on a RBI double off the bat of Conger for a 10-1 lead.

Peoria added a late run in the seventh to knock O’Sullivan from the game. With one out Jim Adduci walked and Blake Lalli singled to left. Ryne Malone drove home Adduci with a two out single and O’Sullivan left the game. Reliever Blake Holler walked Matt Canepa to load the bases but Matt Camp bounced out to end the inning. Cedar Rapids finished their scoring with a pair of runs off Bernard in the eighth. Sweeney doubled in a run to make it 11-2 and then Tyler Johnson delivered a sac fly for the final Kernels run.

Maestri (3-3) took the loss, his third straight as a starter. The right-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over two innings. Platt gave up a pair of runs on three his in his two innings of work. Bernard allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings while allowing five walks and three hits.

Blake Lalli who collected a hit as the DH finished the contest on the mound and got a groundout on three pitches against the only batter he faced. Lalli has now retired all five batters he has faced on the season in three separate bullpen appearances. After getting the last out of the eighth, he led off the ninth with a double to the wall in right-center. The double started a five run rally with RBI singles from Lansford, Adduci and Joseph but the Chiefs fell short 12-7.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Josh Lansford (3B) – After missing back to back games with an in-grown toenail, Lansford collected the Chiefs first two hits of the game and scored their lone run. Josh added a third hit in the 8th and a RBI single in the 9th to finish 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Notes… Wednesday marked the first time in 52 games this season that OF Yusuf Carter didn’t play…Matt Camp is now the lone Chiefs player to appear in every game in 2007…The Chiefs had not allowed a grand slam since June 19, 2005 against Quad Cities…Lansford is the Chiefs first hitter to get four hits in a game this season…Chiefs pitchers allowed just eight runs in the five game series against Wisconsin but have now allowed 21 in just two games against Cedar Rapids…The loss extends a season worst five game losing streak on the road that dates back to game one of a DH at Wisconsin on Sunday May 13th…
