Walk, walk, walk, IF RBI single, RBI walk, pitching change.

Not a good outing for Cherry, as he's pulled without even recording an out in the 9th with a 12-run lead.

Bailey now struggling as he has given up 2 hits and a walk without retiring anyone. Now it's 13-6. Cherry's official line: 0.0 IP, 1 hit, 5 ER's, 0 K's/4 BB's. His ERA is now up to 6.92

This is getting sad. 7 runs are in and Iowa is now on their third pitcher of the inning.

Rapada comes in and ends the madness with a strikeout. 13-8 the final.

All boxes posted.

1. Demote Veal.

2. Cherry won't be back in Chicago for a LONG time.

3. Samardzija is eons from the big leagues.

But,

1. Eric Patterson and Jake Fox, keep it comin' boys.

2. Fontenot should be the 25th man in Chicago and not Pagan.

3. Will Hendry EVER learn to sell high? How many of us were clamoring last year to sell Scott Moore?

Just because Samrdzjias numbers dont look overwhelming, it doesnt mean anything. The Cubs have told him they want him throwing his changeup over 50 percent of the time in his starts so he can get the feel for it and use it as an effective pitch. They know his fastball and breaking pitch are above average, they just want the changeup to get there as well.

Veal dominated the FSL last year. He's way too advanced for that league. Yeah he's been shelled a lot this year, but he's also had his fair share of good outings. It's usually been feast or famine with him.

I absolutely agree with you on Cherry. I doubt we'll see him here until the roster expands.

Not really worried about Samardzija, yet. Like Keener said, he's trying to get a good grip on his change. I'm sure it would be pretty easy for opposing hitters to just sit back on a changeup everytime up if he's throwing it at least 50% of the time.

SP Miller - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4/3 K/BB, 7/4 GO/FO

So the Cubs have to make a decision about Wade Miller now.

I have a bad feeling about this ....

veal is doing everything he said he was going to try to limit. He's been way too wild and is throwing way too many pitches. A lot of his outings are in 3, 4, 5 innings instead of 5, 6, 7 innings. And he is givving up a lot of homers. He's not going to get to the show averageing 4.8 innings per start. so lets hope he turns it around

In the one game I saw Veal pitch (April 24), he couldn't throw a breaking pitch for a strike and hitters were sitting on his fastball. Sounds like it may have been similar when Vance saw him? Walks really killed him.

I hope he turns it around; he did have a couple of decent starts in a row.

IowaCubs.com[/url]"]Cubs Ground Hawks 13-8

The Iowa Cubs trounced the Oklahoma RedHawks 13-8 Saturday night at Principal Park. Trailing 1-0 with just one hit entering the bottom of the sixth, the Iowa offense struck for nine runs, their highest scoring inning since 2005.

After five good innings from rehabbing Texas starter John Rheinecker, the Cubs went to work on the Oklahoma bullpen in the sixth. Scott Moore led off with a triple to left field and came home on Eric Patterson's ground ball single to left to tie the score at 1-1. Ronny Cedeno then doubled and Mike Fontenot earned a walk to load the bases for Mike Kinkade. The Iowa leftfielder singled into right, driving home two runs to put Iowa ahead 3-1. Geovany Soto then smacked the very next pitch from reliever Steven Rowe for a three run home run into the rightfield bleachers to put Iowa ahead 6-1. After Koyie Hill tripled and Buck Coats reached on single, Eric Patterson brought them both home with a triple to centerfield.

Up 9-1 entering the seventh, the Cubs tacked on three more runs. Again Patterson provided a big blow with an RBI triple off the centerfield wall. Buck Coats drove home Geovany Soto in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 13-1.

Wade Miller, making his second rehab start with Iowa lasted five innings allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Randy Wells threw two strong innings of relief striking out four to pick up his third win of the year.

Trailing by 12 runs in the ninth, the Redhawks scored seven runs aided by five walks from the Iowa bullpen.

Game three of the series takes place at 1:05 on Sunday afternoon.

Casey McGehee homered and drove in five runs as Tennessee rallied past visiting Jacksonville, 9-7, on Saturday.

The Smokies (25-22) trailed, 7-2, in the third inning when McGehee launched a three-run shot, his second. The 24-year-old third basemen also had an RBI groundout in the first, singled in the fourth and lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Jemel Spearman ripped a three-run double in the fourth to put Tennessee ahead for good. Spearman went 2-for-4 and Matt Craig chipped in two hits, including an RBI double in the first.

Smokies starter Donnie Veal allowed seven runs on nine hits and four walks in four innings. Jim Henderson (3-1) fanned two in one scoreless inning, and Billy Petrick fanned four over two shutout frames for his first save.

Suns starter Michael Megrew (3-4) allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- on five hits and three walks in three innings.

Cubs' Bats Quieted By Miracle

By: Matt Martinez

FT. MYERS, FL - Jeff Samardzija was effective for the Cubs for five innings as he only allowed two runs (one of which was earned) , one walk and four base hits but still figured in to the decision on the losing side of things.

The Cubs (22-26) left for Sarasota on Sunday a game over five hundred and right in the race in the Florida State League East. After Saturday's loss, Daytona trails Brevard County by eight and a half games.

The Cubs failed to score until the seventh inning when Jesus Valdez led off with a single. Brian Dopirak promptly doubled Valdez home and Daytona had a runner on second with no one out. Cubs' skipper Jody Davis opted to pinch-run for Dopirak with the speedy Robinson Chirinos but the fleet of foot Chirinos was left on second with his hands on his hips as the inning came to a close on three non-productive outs.

Daytona was sat down in order five out of nine innings and only sent more than four men to the plate in an inning one time.

Fort Myers (20-29) sent Zachary Ward to the mound to face Daytona as he lasted six innings and allowed only one earned run on four base hits while striking out four. Ward was relieved by Armando Gabino who worked two hitless innings before Eduardo Morlan tossed a one-two-three ninth to earn the save.

For the second straight night, the Cubs bullpen was exceptional. Grant Johnson struck out the side in the sixth and Mike Phelps threw a perfect seventh and eighth in a losing cause.

The Cubs will face off against the same Miracle tomorrow afternoon at 1:05et. Daytona will return home to the "Jack" on Monday night as the Cubs will take on the first-place Manatees. Tickets are still available, call the Cubs offices for details (386) 257-3172.
