Our main SP's down on the farm tonight had a real good outing and a real bad outing. I'll start with the bad.

Tennessee lost 8-4 as Holliman was roughed up: 5.2 IP, 11 hits, 8 runs, 1 K/6 BB's, and a HR given up. Decent day for the offense though. Matt Craig went a perfect 4/4 and Kroeger belted out two solo HR's. Jake Fox and Nate Fuld were each 1/4.

While Holliman struggled, Atkins was AWESOME: 8 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 3 K's/0 BB's!!! Matt Avery picked up the save as Daytona won 3-0. Kyle Reynolds and Nate Spears were each 2/4 with a double. Chris Amador was 2/5 with a double and an RBI. Dope was 1/4 with a double and an RBI. Colvin was 0/1 with two BB's and an RBI.

Peoria just lost 3-2. Decent line for Maestri: 5.2 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 5 K's/0 BB's, 1 HR allowed. He picked up the loss as the offense couldn't get things going. Canzler, Yusuf, and Castillo were each 2/4. Lansford and Camp were each 1/4. No extra-base-hits for the Chiefs tonight.

Iowa is getting rocked, 12-3 in the 8th. O'Malley didn't even make it out of the 2nd inning: 1.1 IP, 8 hits, 6 runs, 2 K's/1 BB. Howard and Baez weren't any better as they gave up 6 runs in the next 3 and 2/3's. Hoffpauir hit his 9th HR of the season and Fontenot is 2/4. Cedeno has a double and EPatt is 1/3 with an RBI and a walk. Felix is 0/4 with a strikeout.

IowaCubs.com"]Hawks Drop Cubs 13-3

The Oklahoma Redhawks scored early and often, routing the Cubs 13-3 Friday night at Principal Park. Oklahoma scored in five of the first six innings to snap their five game losing streak.

The RedHawks chased Cubs starter Ryan O'Malley from the ballgame with out in the second inning after leftfielder Jason Botts' two-run double made the score 6-1. Iowa reliever Ben Howard came into the game with runners at second and third, and prevented any further damage.

Iowa rallied in the bottom of the second. Micah Hoffpauir led off the second with an opposite field home run to leftcenter that made the score 6-2. Ronny Cedeno followed with a double, and then Scott Moore walked. Eric Patterson's RBI single brought home Cedeno, and down 6-3, the Cubs had the tying run at the plate. However, Iowa could not find the hit to get closer than three runs.

Oklahoma piled on after the second, scoring seven unanswered runs which included a two run home run in the third from shortstop David Matranga and a three run home run from DH Kevin West in the sixth.

The Cubs and the RedHawks play game two of their four game series Saturday at 7:05 pm at Principal Park.

Jacksonville rode a steady offensive attack as all eight position players in the lineup scored a run in an 8-4 win over Tennessee on Friday.

Jacksonville (27-21) plated four runs in the second inning as Octavio Martinez smacked an RBI single, Jimmy Roham ripped an RBI double and starting pitcher Joey Norrito added a run-scoring single.

Chin Lung Hu knocked in a run with a groundout in the second, and blasted his first homer of the year, a solo shot, in the fourth. Marshall McDougall chipped in a two-run double to tie him for third in the Southern League with 35 RBIs.

Norrito (1-0) allowed three runs on seven hits while fanning one without a walk in 6 1/3 innings. Jonathan Meloan recorded the final out for his sixth save.

Smokies starter Mark Holliman (6-2) entered the game with a Southern League-best 1.17 ERA, but was touched for eight runs on 11 hits and six walks while fanning one in 5 2/3 innings. His ERA climbed to 2.26.

Josh Kroeger went 2-for-4 with two solo homers, his sixth and seventh, while Matt Craig went 4-for-4 for Tennessee (24-22). --Steve Conley/MLB.com

DaytonaCubs.com"]Daytona Busts Out of Losing Streak Behind Mitch Atkins

Cubs Turn the Tables and Goose-Egg Miracle, 3-0

By: Matt Martinez

FT. MYERS, FL - The infamous 20-inning scoreless streak the Daytona Cubs were suffering through ended on Friday night in the first inning. And as the Cubs' bats awakened, Mitch Atkins silenced Fort Myers' lumber for eight innings in route to a 3-0 victory.

Daytona (22-25) scattered three runs in three separate innings to get past Fort Myers (19-28) and break the five-game skid.

Atkins lasted longer than any Cub's starter this year as he went eight strong scoreless innings (at one time retiring 19 straight), where he allowed just two singles and walked none. Atkins was relieved by Matt Avery who tossed a dormant ninth as he recorded his seventh save in nine tries.

The Cubs offense awakened from it's 20-inning slumber in the first as Chris Amador blasted the first strike he saw for a double. Matt Matulia bunted him over to third and Tyler Colvin skied a sacrifice fly to center to score Amador and give the Cubs an early 1-0 advantage.

Daytona struck again in the third as Nate Spears led things off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Amador laced an RBI single to left field to score Spears as the Cubs doubled their lead, 2-0.

The Cubs final run came in the top of the eighth as Brian Dopirak lasered a double to deep right-center to score Colvin from second and give the Daytona bullpen a little insurance heading into the home half of the eighth.

Atkins and Avery would not need the insurance as they collectively only allowed three base runners.

The Cubs will take on this same Miracle squad tomorrow night in Fort Myers at 7:05 et. All Cub's broadcasts can be heard on 1380 WELE or worldwide at daytonacubs.com.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Fall 3-2 Friday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs dropped game one of a five game weekend series 3-2 to the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Friday evening at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs are now 22-24 on the season and 2-3 on the current nine game home stand.

The Chiefs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Matt Camp singled and advanced on a balk by Timber Rattlers starter Steven Richard. Russ Canzler drove a line drive single into center field to score Camp for the first run of the game.

Peoria starter Alex Maestri held Wisconsin scoreless until the sixth inning when Greg Halman hit a double that landed between Yusuf Carter and Alfred Joseph in left field. The next batter, Kuo Hui Lo hit a two-run homer to left center giving Wisconsin a 2-1 lead. Maestri left the game after recording his career high fifth strikeout in a season high 5 2/3 innings of work. Jayson Ruhlman came on in relief and quickly surrendered a double to Carlos Peguero who scored on an RBI single by Gerardo Avila just off the glove of a fully extended Matt Camp at second base to extend the Rattlers lead to 3-1.

The Chiefs answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Carter and Wellington Castillo both singled into center field. Carter came around to score on an RBI ground out by DJ Lewis to cut the deficit to one at 3-2. Lefty Rollie Gibson came on to retire Camp and end the inning with the tying run in scoring position. The Chiefs weren’t able to get another runner past first base in the last two innings against the Rattler bullpen.

Maestri threw a career high 5 2/3 innings but suffered a tough luck loss allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Ruhlman allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. After Alburquerque allowed two walks in 2/3 of an inning, Jeremy Papelbon tossed 1 1/3 hitless with a strikeout. Richard worked 5 1/3 innings allowing just one run on five hits to pick up his first win of the season. Fiorenza earned his second save of the season working a scoreless ninth.
