I just fall in love with some guys, that is all. It's a good pick in the supp round, no doubt.

I want a high risk/high reward guy though.

Some just only focused on the Back-up catcher remark.

Now, I'll have to wait till prob. the 5th.

Out of curiosity, what are the steps you'd have to climb up the ladder to reach participating in the draft room?

Become an area scout, one step up (very big step though).

Cool - you know we're all pulling for that to happen sooner instead of later for you.

Crosby please...

Dammit.

Tim, this mentions my boss.

Don Mitchell, now a player agent, was working as Midwest cross-checker for Cleveland in the spring of '89 when he received a call from area scout Tom Couston.

"Tom told me, 'I've got this third baseman at a junior college I want you to see. He inside-outs everything and he never pulls the ball. No other scouts like him, so there won't be anybody else at the game when you go there,'" Mitchell recalled.

Sure enough, when Mitchell went to see Thome play for Illinois Central College, he was the only scout in attendance. He saw a skinny kid with a big frame, a sunken chest and lots of enthusiasm for the game.

It was enough to pique his curiosity, and when the draft rolled around, the Indians acted on Couston's "gut instinct,'' picked Thome and signed him for $15,000. Sometime this season, Thome will join the 500 home run club.

That same year, the Indians were criticized for wasting a No. 1 pick on outfielder Calvin Murray even though it was common knowledge that he was bound for the University of Texas. Not long afterward, Cleveland fired scouting director Chet Montgomery.

Nearly two decades later, Montgomery's 1989 draft looks pretty darned good. The Indians selected Thome and future big leaguers Jerry Dipoto, Jesse Levis, Alan Embree, Curtis Leskanic, Kelly Stinnett and Brian Giles between the third and 17th rounds.

so, high schooler #3 and then four college position players? Interesting. Different.

Outside of Vitters, I wasn't really excited about any of the other picks.

I was reading up on the C in the second. Most scouts (that I read anyway) say his ceiling is a back-up, no bat, C. Is that really the best option in the 2nd round?

Scouts hate guys who walk. Seriously, Wilken seems to be changing the course of the Cubs drafting all these patient hitters and no power arms. I like the picks. The report I read on Donaldson was quite different from what you just said though.

I'm not overly upset about any of the picks. We obviously won't know how they turn out for quite some time. I hope that Donaldson has quite a bit higher ceiling then that as well. Especially at the C position.

There were a couple picks I couldn't find any info on. So any info you guys have would be great.

As far as the the picks tomorrow (actually later today!) do you think the Cubs will go more pitching oriented? I thought for sure they'd have picked a P in the first 5 picks, but I was wrong.

Do you guys see value guys available in the next few rounds?

wow, lots and lots of college players. I cannot believe people are seriously complaining about drafting a 3b! He's 17!

If you're wondering about Carlos Rivera out of East Aurora, yes I've seen him, I went to their 1st game.

There are 3 scouts that know about him, I have to give Zielinski credit, I didn't say anything about him and I know my boss didn't.

He's about 6'2" 185 R/R.

Fringy tools across the board, big for a CF, great pick for spot and will prob. sign.

35/45 hit

30/40 power

45/45 runner

45/45 arm

40/45 field

lol - thanks for the scouting report. As always, I'm anxious to see these guys play.

Btw, the Cubs won't sign Rivera. He was a token draftee as the Cubs didn't have a kid from the area selected.

But, I did get my 1st draftee signed and has reported to TB. :D
