Hey,

I don't get a chance to follow the Minors much, so can someone fill me in in what's going on with Sean Marshall? I was a pretty big fan of his when he came up, but he doesn't seem on the front lines of talk anymore. What were/are the issues?

Thanks in advance

He had some shoulder problems that had to be worked out in extended spring training. He's currently down in Iowa getting his pitch count built back up.

He has done pretty darn well so far. If problems arise with the Cubs' pitching staff, he should be able to fill in and do reasonably well.

Thanks a million, I appreciate that. I hope that his shoulder issues aren't anything more serious long term. With the Prior/Wood issues of the past few years, I cringe when I hear that tied to Marshall. If he stays healthy, I feel he could be a solid guy for us. I look forward to him getting the call again.

Marshall has been banged up quite frequently I believe. He started with the organization in 2003. He threw 86 innings that year in college, then 80 after getting drafted, doubling his previous yearly high. In 2004 and 2005 his seasons were cut short, as he threw just 80 and 90 pitches. In 2006 he was back up to 150, but finished the season with an oblique issue. And of course his 2007 started with health concerns. I think health questions are going to surround him for the foreseeable future. But everything about his minor league success suggests he can be an effective major league pitcher.

I didn't know he had so much of those issues in his past. I'll assume the organization is doing "right" by him and he can be an effective part of the Major Leage club soon. I have a good feeling about him.

Hopefully he can but he is pretty well blocked by Guzman and probably Marmol in terms of prospects as well as Lilly and Marquis in the ML rotation. He also has to stave off Gallagher and Veal.

I'm wondering if they'd consider moving him to the pen but that too is very crowded.

Yeah, I'm sure that's true. It always strkes me as odd that his name is never even mentioned anymore when they start talking about roster moves, pitching problems and all. Not a good sign but hopefully motivation to work harder and get back up.

It's mainly because until about a week ago, he was still in rehab mode and not a viable option to be called up. He's certainly behind Guzman and probably even with Marmol on the depth chart.

Marshall is trade bait at this point. I suspect that Hendry will bring him up quite a bit in discussions this summer.

I totally disagree.

I should hope so. People see a young lefty that's been just good enough to make it to the big leagues. With any luck they don't see the injury concerns and the low ceiling. With the way people over value lefties, his perceived value is probably a lot higher than his actual value.

I totally disagree with your disagreement. :D
