IIRC, lou has at the very least hinted around that Pie was going to stick with the ball club even after Guzman gets called up. And I think that most people around here are in agreement with me thinking he should, but i was just wondering what most people really thought he could bring to the table THIS year.

The homerun certainly got my hopes up last night, but I'm basically hoping for a pretty decent #8 hitter with great defense that can gradually improve at the plate. Anyways, heres to another day we hopefully will see murton and won't see Izturiz starting.

well considering the article i read about pie under a different thread, i think he's a very grateful and passoniate kid. i really really hopes he keeps hitting because jones is OK in my book but trotting him out to center everyday would be a mistake. given sorianos hamstring and murton/floyd's lack of experience/range we need someone to cover some ground in center. especially when the weather warms up in chicago.

I think this is linked to the decision on Theriot and Izturis. If you keep running Izzy out there, there's no way the lineup could support waiting for Pie's bat to come around. With Izzy on the bench (or traded ), Pie can safely hit 8th. And he protects Soriana and Floyd/Murton/Jones by covering the gaps and playing great CF.

totally worthless stat - i've had no several friends who are all fans of other teams call/email me about Pie with nothing less than praise. I even got offered Broglio for him on the phone, lol.

I love the way this kid plays the game!! He has passion unlike any player I have seen in a long time.

I loved that article about him the other day. The kid who shined shoes (I can picture it too, when I was in the DR it seemed like all the little boys were shoe shine boys, that's all they could do). Running with tires on the beach early in the morning. It's awesome to see someone work his tail off to be successful and it really gives hope to such a wide range of people who look up to him. Keep it up, kid.

I loved the article too but for some reason it made me think of sammy too much. I guess because sammy grew up poor in the DR. Nothing really against sammy but I just could never get over some of the things i heard about him being a terrible teammate. just left a bitter taste in my mouth when he left.

props to izturiz for that hit last night but what exactly is his value anymore. he played what 2 innings of defense last night and blew what could have been a vital play in the ninth? if he looked like ozzie smith at short i could see his value as a late inning defensive replacement but he even fails at that  .

Well, if the lineup can support Jacque Jones and Izturis, it can support Pie and Izturis.

Pie's OPS is currently higher than Jacque's, and it projects to be slightly higher than Jacque's. Based on each player's current OPS, substituting Pie for Jones would result in about 16 more runs over the course of a season.

The lineup didn't support JJ and Izturis. It's weak. But we're agreeing here. I want Pie to play everyday and stick. As has been said elsewhere by me and others, we need to have some young cheap talent on the field to support the expense of Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and future acquistions (please, Arod, please!). One reason I didn't like the Floyd signing. We didn't need him.

Using Jones' current OPS to predict his production for the rest of the season is absurd. He has only had 77 ABs, and he started the year on a cold streak. He will not maintain such a poor OPS for the entire year. He may revert to his pre 2006 production, but he may regress less than that. What projection are you using to estimate that Pie will bat better than Jones over the course of a season?

True. You can never have enough GOOD players.

The projection that Pie is [expletive] awesome and should start in center field for the next 10 years.

Let me rephrase slightly, to be more specific:

By what projection is Pie estimated to be better than Jones over the couse of this season?

The only thing I dislike about Pie is how his delicious name always makes me crave some delicious baked goods every time I see it, and I can't eat said baked goods due to my diet. DAMN YOU, PIE!!!

Haha, well I can't speak for anyone else, but..

The projection of my wild imagination.

I personally don't think Pie will put up as good offensive power numbers (rbi, slg) than Jones this season, but I think it's reasonable to assume that his development as a major league hitter is important enough to keep him in the line-up, all while making our outfield defense noticeably better. I personally think that having a Soriano, Pie, Jones outfield, until the day Jones is traded, is our best defensive and offensive option, with Murton taking the spot when there is a lefty pitching in opposition.

While I love Matt Murton, I think his greatest value to the team right now might in fact, be his trade value. He could bring us some pretty decent pitching. But it has to be the right deal. I say this because I believe at the end of the season, we're going to look back and wish we had a more solid bullpen to go with this offense. Just my opinion though.

Does 'Felix' mean 'fleet of'? Cause that would be awesome.

i can't speak for cheapseats, but i do know that PECOTA projects Pie to be better than Jones.

Jones -- .284/.343/.473 VORP: 12.3 WARP: 2.8 EqA: .279

Pie -- .288/.342/.480 VORP: 25.3 WARP: 5.0 EqA: .283

I think the long-term plan is for Pie to bat 2nd, for Soriano and Pie to be the dynamic duo at the top of the order in front of Lee and Ramirez. And if Pie starts heating up this year, I think they'll put him there. Why the hell not? Until then, the 2 void will be held by whomever is hot at the moment (currently Theriot -- who, like Neifi and Ronny before him, will probably turn into a pumpkin at some point, sticking us with Izturis in the 8 hole again.)

But it'll be okay, because those top four -- Soriano, Pie, Lee, Ramirez -- will one day be carved in stone as the lethal top half of the Chicago Cubs lineup for years to come. It's just a matter of when. If God loves the Cubs as much as I think He does, it will be soon.

I would think the best case scenario they envision has Pie adding more power and being the 5-6 hitter behind Lee and Ramirez(or splitting them up, whatever). Hopefully Lou has the sense to put Murton at the 2 spot when Theriot's BABIP fortune runs out.
