Astros December 13: Acquired pitchers Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio from the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Willy Taveras and pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh.

This deal was roundly criticized, both here and in scouting circles, because Hirsh was a highly touted prospect who was major-league ready, and some believed he could already be as good as Jennings.

Here's how they've fared so far:

Jennings: 2 starts, DL with elbow tendonities

Hirsh: 4 starts, 3.16 ERA, 23/7 K/BB in 25 innings, 1.13 WHIP

By the way, Jennings is getting $5.5M this year and then is a UFA; Hirsh will be under the Rockies' control for several years. I think we'll be laughing at the Stros for a while about this one.

It was a terrible deal for the Astros when it happened, and it's only going to get worse. It's definitely one they are going to regret for some time.

Didn't everyone but the Astros know how dumb that deal was when it happened? The injury to Jennings was just the icing.

Yup.

I'm so glad we stayed out of the trade market to acquire starting pitching this offseason. Paying out the backside in FA wasn't pleasant, but dropping talent on the mediocrity that was available for an arm and a leg is even worse.

It's four starts.

I was definitely in the "Astros made a horrible deal" camp, but it's way, way, way too early to examine the deal.
